Since the Mid-Atlantic members list has grown to over 100 (southeast and northeast combined), with many more from this area who have not put themselves on the list, it's probably time to talk about a separate Mid-Atlantic forum. As much as I enjoy reading about biking in New York, Boston, Miami, Knoxville, etc. I don't feel particularly connected to these areas. With the DC area split in two, I don't think that we are adequately represented in either the northeast or southeast forums.

Do you want to have a separate Mid-Atlantic forum?

What is the Mid-Atlantic region? I think of Mid-Atlantic as Delaware, Maryland, DC, Virginia, but I could see it extending to Philadelphia and North Carolina.

Any thoughts?

BosWash's current southern limit is Fredericksburg, VA (i.e., northern VA); not somewhere in NC.

NC has MUCH more in common culturaly & cycling-ly w/ SC, GA, TN than w/ "Camp Runnamuck".

Including NC in the Mid-Atlantic would split Charlotte.

Yes.

Kind of agree wtih skiffrun as Northern VA is a different 'country' compared to the rest of VA/NC, etc.

However, ski wise, the Mid Atlantic area does include NC.

Could you tell that to Major League Baseball who for some reason see fit to black out Orioles and Nationals games in NC?

Please don't split Virginia. I know y'all think us downstaters are a bunch of rubes, but it ain't true. VA, MD, DE, D.C., and NJ would make a fine mid-Atlantic grouping.

I always thought of PA as a split state. (just my opinion so please don't take offense)
Philadelphia out to the Harrisburg area with mid-Atlantic
Pittsburgh to Erie with Ohio and the Great Lakes
Allentown to North-central PA with New York and Northeast

NJ also splits between Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Probably somewhere around exit 6.

VA splits between north and south somewhere around Fredericksburg, but I'd consider the whole state Mid-Atlantic (conveniently forgetting about Roanoke and the west :p )

NC and southern VA have a lot in common, but I think of NC as firmly south, with SC and GA.

I wonder if the mods would allow a split-state?
Maybe a Mid-Atlantic forum consisting of the states along the Chesapeake Bay and lower Delaware River - Virginia, DC, Maryland, Delaware, SE Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey.

New England, Mid-Atlantic, Southern.

When I was a young person, our elementary school history text-books had definitions of the above three categories. If U don't remember them, or are so unfortunate as to be so young that when U went to elementary schools didn't bother teaching such things, then for kicks I challenge U to do some research.

Of course, defns appropriate for 200 + years ago often don't really provide much insight to today's world.

By "U", I mean any generic reader of this thread and no one in particular.

Just wanted to let everyone know.

I wrote to the head moderator requesting a separate Mid-Atlantic forum.
Brian's response seemed positive. He said that he would give some thought to how to add a new forum into the existing structure.

If this is going to happen, we should confirm what the boundries are make a recommendation to Brian.

West Virginia belongs in the Mid-Atlantic region. I would put PA in there too.

I agree that Virginia riders don't a regional bond with cyclists in Florida or Louisiana (Tennesseans don't either, for that matter).

But as a geographical matter, Virginia generally isn't considered a Middle Atlantic state (http://www.bartleby.com/61/5/M0280500.html).

Well, the jury is out on the definition of Mid-Atlantic States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mid-Atlantic_States) I guess. I always considered VA and WV to be mid-atlantic. Maybe "Capitol Region" instead?

Yes, the regions are too large. It would probably make more sense to break "Northeast" into:

New England + New York/New Jersey + "Middle Atlantic" (and Virginia)

The "Southeast" region could also be divided, but it doesn't have much traffic anyway.

Except by the people in Virginia. ;)

I'll trust Google Maps to answer this better than some dictionary.

Yeah, I seem to remember there was some sort of war that decided all this. :)

Virginia picked the south and West Virginia picked the North so I guess we should respect that unless we want to start all that up again. I live in Virginia now and it's a pretty redneck place. They sure do hate the gays here.
