well, the road bike bug bite me hard! I love it now, but I'm new and have so many questions about it. First, i know to wipe down the bike and dry it after a ride in the rain, but some os my screws are starting to rust, i took most of then out and wd-40'd them to try to take the rust of. what should i do about this? The chain to is showing sings of rust, but if i wd-40 that I'll have to lube it up again. Also, whats a good lube, and how much to you apply? and my last question, is I'm in school (RHIT) for 9 months out of the year, and i am thinking about joining a biking club/team should I join one at home for only 3 months out of the year?

thanks!

First and foremost, replace the chain. Riding with a rusty chain is begging for an injury. I would also replace any screw that is rusting, they can easily break and then you have a costly repair.

I use Finish Line Teflon Lube (http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?category=&subcategory=&brand=0606&sku=1740&storetype=&estoreid=) for lubing derailleurs, chain, etc.

If your srews and bolts are rusting, replace them with stainless steel hardware. A little rust on the outside of a chain is no cause for alarm, but it is telling you one of two things; either lube the chain more frequently, or by a more corrosion resistant chain. If you ride in the rain a lot, buy some good wet chain lube at your bike shop. WD 40 is not a good thing to use on a bike.

I didnit wd-40 any moving parts, i used it as a rust inhibiter for the screws. why is wd-40 bad for the bike?

Because it dissolves lubricants.

spazegun, I see you are in fairfax county, so am I. I go to school in AZ, Ariz. St. Univ., and have just been riding on my own here. Im thinking about joining the cycling club in AZ. Where do you ride around here? Ive been living on the parkway, there is a nice shoulder for the entire part I ride except for about a quarter mile area.
