Introductions - Oh the joys of being in college...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hello,

Yes, another newbie. I'm currently at the University of Texas in Austing attempting to get two degrees that will lead me on a career pathway to a bag boy at a grocery store. Music, and Anthropology strange combo, of course! I am a member of the UT cycling team and probably was the least active member as far as riding goes. My current ride is a beater, Diamond back sorrento that weighs more than I want to think. This October I will be heading off to England, Southampton, for a year of study abroad. Hopefully if I can ever find a job I will be able to afford a cyclocross bike. The 30 mile club road rides with yours truly on a mtnbike were no fun lol...special perhaps is the word.

A plus side to owning a lower end bike, you become quite adapt at fixing and tuning your bike since everything needs to be adjusted cleaned or replaced :( after a few rides. I say its time for a new bike when your rear hub has an eliptical pattern to it when coasting!.

Cheers ,
Brad Rollans

P.S. I'm always game for a ride or hang, if anyone is around Southampton let me know, same goes for Arlington, Tx (the parents pad), and Austin (the higher education recipient of my student loans).

Go Longhorns! welcome to the forums! you are living in the right town to do extensive research for the degree in music.... The Live Music Capital of the World, and bag-boy convention center. I have family in Austin and am always trying to create plans to go visit. Liz

welcome Brad!

i was an undergrad at UT from 1989-1994 - also a double major (Plan II and Electrical Engineering) and i was also on the UT cycling team ---- and i too was super poor and rode a beater. i bought a Giant for $300 and had NO money for repairs so it squeaked and everything got fixed. i got made fun of at the start line of all my races for my old stryofoam helmet, non-clipless pedals (cages) and no bike jersey (i had 1 pair of bike shorts and 1 pr gloves)

yeah, riding on sub-standard bikes with no money for repairs sucks, but i was happy b/c i got to ride every day --- and i still beat most of the guys with nice bikes as i simply was more fit! put a big smile on my face to drop guys riding $2000 bikes on my squeaking, cracking beater...

enjoy your study abroad. i tried and tried when i was an undergrad but the Engineering program threatened to take my schloarship, and i was dependent on the cash, so i had to wait until 2001 to do my "study abroad" as i have now been living in Germany for just over 2 years...

note: i am also originally from the Dallas Area - Hillcrest HS in north dallas --- although my parents now live in New Braunfels.

Mt Bonnell and the West Hills... out towards Lake Austin Blvd... 360 --- they weren't quite as sprawled when i was there, but it's still a great area to ride!
