No big story line here just a bunch of pics of some awesome trails we rode
this past weekend near Davis / Canaan Valley WV.

We didn't think of going till Saturday morning mostly due to the fact the
weather was going to be so hot along the Ohio River. Never got out or
the 70's in the forests there. Even down near 50 on Saturday night.

After setting up camp we finally got on the trails around 3 p.m. so we
kept our ride to the trails inside Canaan Loop Road. Sunday however
found us starting at Canaan Valley State Park and riding the Allegheny
Trail back to Blackwater Falls State Park (The Park to Park to locals).
What an awesome weekend of riding.

Warning: See the quagmire to the left of the tree? If you ever ride
this trail (Park to Park) do not attempt to blast through this one. It doesn't look
bad when you get close, however it nearly swallowed a SantaCruz Superlite last
year along with its rider. There is a tight but doable bypass to the right.

Sorry we didn't get photos of some of the real rocky technical portions of these
trails, we were having too darn much fun to even think about stopping.

That would be a new F5. He just stepped up from a Scott
racing 24 a couple months ago and has really been hard to
keep up with now... :D

PS: very nice bike.

Thanks, the trails around Davis and Canaan Valley are a bunch of fun. Very
rocky, but lots of fun if you like that sort of thing. There are easier trails
there as well that will still challenge most riders.

I love rocky trails. I find them challenging even if they can be frustrating, but I definitely enjoy rock gardens. Those definitely look like a lot of fun.

Nice pics! I used to hike near that area in a place called Dolly Sodds. Very open, almost like being above timberline. Not sure if there are trails or they allow bikes in the area, but it would be worth checking out if you are nearby.....and if you already know the area/policy - I'd love to know!! thanks!

I recently bought 50 acres of Potomac riverfront about 1 mile east of Gormania. Just across the river is a coal railroad that is being converted to a bike path from DC to Pittsburgh.

That area is very scenic.

The Sodds are beautiful however no bikes allowed. There are a couple trails just outside
the Sodds on the southern end however, they are nothing like the Sodds. They do allow
XC Skiing in the Sodds so I'm thinking of trying that this winter.

RE the quagmire: Salsa was actually pulled from a "Revenge of the Rattlesnake" race a few years back when he was 8 because the couse marshalls thought that EXACT spot would swallow him. He was SO pissed... As I recall, the course marshall told me that he said "You're not the Mom of me!!" before going, none to quietly....

I figure he would be upset. I've seen him ride and I don't think he would have had any
problem getting around it, even back then. There is a bypass to the right of the big tree,
between it and the small one, then a hard right, swing around the swamp, and back to the
left. He could have handled it I'm sure. That's a shame they pulled him instead of
just posting someone at that spot. The only reason I knew it was a "Veerrrryyy deeeep"
one was the fact that I posted near the pic. That stuff was like quicksand. We had a
time getting the bike out while laughing our butts off at our friend....

I didn't know the "ROTR" went out that way... However, I've never seen the complete course...
But I can tell you from riding most the trails in that area, it would have to be a tough one.
:D

It's a blast up there....

Well, you voiced his problem with being pulled at that race! The ROTR used to go from Blackwater to Canaan - short course was @16 miles, meduim @24, long @30+. (I'm thinking this year's version will be the 50+ version as part of th WV/VA Ultra Series.) It was always one of the smaller races, because people wouldn't race it more than once unless they really really needed the points, or were newbies & didn't know better (my kids!)
