General Cycling Discussion - What's a good compact fishing pole?

I'm looking for a good compact pole that I can pack along on the bike. I think they make them for backpackers. Anyone have any good suggestions?

You ever seen the ad on tv for the pen fishing rod try that. I have one for my son
I picked up locally. I myself use a small wood block hook , sinker , bobber , and fish
with corn or dig up a couple worms with my multi tool when I run across a body water
inviting me to rest for a bit.

Orvis used to sell (and I assume still does) backpacking fly rods that broke down into manageable sized segments.

Cabela's Stowaway 7 (http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20431-cat20457_TGP&id=0029772319940a&navCount=2&podId=0029772&parentId=cat20457&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=7IS&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20457&hasJS=true) combo is a good small package. At $205 for a rod/reel/backing/line/rod and reel case, you can't go wrong. If you want to go even cheaper, there the Stowaway 5 (I have the 3 wt rod) for around $140. It's not a bad rod...not a great one...but not bad either.

I'd suggest fly rods over bait dunking rods for bicycling since, theoretically, it should be lighter. But I like fly fishing over bait dunking any day:D

Any $15 telescoping rod will work as well as you will ever need. I use a no-brand model with a Mitchell 310 (compact size) reel.

Daiwa Minicast......it folds up into a little case. I've had mine for years & actually that's the only pole I use, lol. It's an ultralight set up, so keep that in mind & can be had for $39.99 at bass pro shops website.

The Diawa Exective combo comes with a spinning reel and a fly reel with a reversable handle. When used as a fly rod it tests out at a 8.5 wt.

Are you talking about for touring, or for fishing specific trips from the house?
For fishing trips from the house, this is what I use if I'm going to be wade fishing.

The Fishpond Double Hau (http://www.fishpondusa.com/doubleHaul.cfm)l is a very nice hydration pack/chest pack. Doesn't interfere with casting and carries way too much stuff. Remove the chest pack and it's a nice pack for riding.

I am looking for something small. I just want to be able to try a few casts, here and there. Usually nothing serious. If I really want to catch some fish I will take my boat.

Its a teloscoping pack pole.... Wal-Mart has em' for $20-25.... Comes with an ultra lite real...Good deal.

Thanks for the reply. I got the Shakespeare today and also tried it out today. It is just what I was looking for. I gave a kid the plastic case it came in and he was happy as hell.

Ummm, plan on spinning, casting, catfishing, flyfishing, or what?
The type of rig (rod/reel) you need depends on the type of fishing you plan on doing.

My fly rod breaks down to 9 inches.

several options;

i have a nephew that used an ice fishing rig with an open-face reel.

personally, i use a 2-piece 5'6" rod and reel. i just break it down and ride with it in a backpack.....funny story, i was doing this and on my way to a county forest preserve. this guy in a truck saw me riding with a fishing pole sticking out of my backback and asked if i had a few minutes. he said that he has a pond he made for catch and release fishing. he invited me to come fish anytime. turns out he owned a new real estate firm. i think this was a way of networking.

also, i used pvc pipes to make rod-holders and attached them to my trailer. i pull my son along with our rods/tackle to a local forest preserve to fish.

i recommend avoiding rods that break down into more than 2 pieces. a buddy went fishing in canada with me with an expensive, 3 piece, st croix rod. it broke the first time he used it.
