The salesman at my local bike shop said that the 20 inch 7.2 FX on the floor was the correct size for me. I am 6'1", my inseam is 32-33". When I rode it, it was fine but it seemed he raised the seat fairly high to accommodate my height.

Would you feel it is reasonable to check out the feel of any 22.5" Trek on the floor if there isn't an 7.2 FX in stock or is this not really necessary? Should I just not be concerned if the 20" 7.2 FX feels fine despite my observation that the seat was raised significantly to obtain a good comfort level?

Thanks very much in advance to all who take the time to read and reply to this.

The sloping top tube makes the seat post appear high compared to most road bikes. If the ride is comfortable, and you reach the handlebars without being either cramped or stretched, then the 20" probably fits you okay.

I am 6'1" but with a 34.5" inseam, longer in the legs but shorter in the torso than you. I ride a 22.5" 7500fx, the predicessor to the 7.5fx. It felt better for my leg length, but I had to get a shorter stem to not be stretched out.

Hope this helps some.

I'd check out the 22.5" model; it can't hurt. How many inches was the seatpost raised on the 20" model? Doghouse is right; the FX has a sloping top tube and it'll be normal to show several inches of post. My wife's 7.5FX has over 6 inches of seatpost.

Thanks for your response. I haven't replied until now because I wanted to try out several different bikes. I recently got a 21" Giant Cypress DX which has been a real pleasure to ride.

They should know... but not always. Be sure to ride the 22.5 before you buy. My wife is 5'4" and she was put in a 17.5"... I'm 6'2" and was fit for a 22.5" had I bought an FX bike. Have fun :)

At those heights, I'd put you on a 22.5". Chances are you were put on a 20" because the shop didn't have a 22.5" in stock and needed to get a sale out the door.
