It brings back nice memories when scanning thru my album to find pics for this thread. Seemed so long ago... that means it's time for another vacation! :D

There are deer all over the lower part of the island, walking up to you begging for food, sleeping in peoples' doorways. It's against the law to harass the deer so they take full avantage.

On top of the island live a large group of monkeyboons who like nothing better but to steal your bag/purse and rummage through it for food. They're kinda scary. If you don't surrender your belongings, they'll try to pull it off you, screaming at the tops of their lungs.

I haven't been there for many years, and miss the Giant Spatula (http://wikitravel.org/en/Miyajima). Oh yeah, almost forgot.. the last time I was there waiting to take the boat back to Hiroshima, the slow-moving ferry crashed into the 50-foot dock, sending countless tourists diving into the bay. Very amusing.

:eek: Yeah, if they aren't used to humans, they can kill you. I remember as a child, there were two separate news stories where a farmer and a hunter were both kicked to death by two separate deers in two separate counties on the same day! My mom used those incidences as warnings to my sister and me to never approach a deer no matter how cute and fragile they looked to us. I then hit and killed a bambi on a two lane highway when I was 16 (I didn't see the baby deer in the dark and had no chance to swerve to miss it). I parked on the side of the road scared to death I had hit a human. When I got out, I saw the baby deer in the road, it's little leg quivering, dying, and the Doe on the side of the road running back and forth frantically watching her little baby die. I sobbed for hours after that, refused to drive for a week and have never forgotten that image. Deers both scare me and fascinate me.
