I just found out about this. There is now a national no-call list. You can sign up at http://www.donotcall.gov

What a wonderful, wonderful thing! If enough people sign up for this, those scumbag telemarketers will be out of business.

I think enough people have signed up for this. The first day, they said they got like 1000 hits a minute or something like that on the website. I signed up the early morning of day 2 and put on my phone as well as my cellphone and my parents' phone and my brother's phone. We're all covered!

My wife signed us up online the first day, but it won't kick in until October.
Here's hoping we can hold out 'til then.

The state of Pennsylvania has had this for about 1 year now - It’s great. There have been a few companies who tried to call people anyway - they have been finned $1000 per call.

New York has had it's registry for 2 years now, and it has worked wonders. I used to get 5-6 calls a day, now I get maybe 2 a month. Last year, I actually nailed a telemarketer-I played along, got all the info needed, then called the NY attorney general's office with it. The telemarketing company got a $5000 fine for that one call.

Now, if you really want to nail the telemarketers, always pick up your phone before the second ring. Most telemarketers use a sequential calling machine, then have a computer check if you are on the 'do not call' list once a connection is made. If you pick up before the computer cuts it off, then you've got them! If they hang up, it's a nuisance call and they get fined big-time.

You will, however, notice a lot of "1 ring" hangups, due to the aforementioned automated calling setup. If you wish to, you can complain to the local phone company, and they will enter complaints about these annoyances, too.

I've met a few people involved in the telemarketing industry, and nearly without exception, they are slimeballs. The sooner we can eradicate the scourge of telemarketing, the better!

I used to get a lot of calls from local people selling vinyl siding and windows. Five or six of them a day sometimes. I was so fed up with them calling, I started telling them to come out and mesure my house.

I have a 200 year old brick house, so they wasted their time coming out to mesure the house. No way to install the vinyl siding to the house, and the vinyl windows can't be installed in the window frames on my house. Then they would tell me "We also do gutters and roofs" Brand new copper gutters and a slate roof...

The calls stopped after that

I hate phone spam so much I got a specialized caller id box that blocks all calls that do not send callerid as well as any numbers I program into it. I very rarely get a telemarketing call and those I do get have their numbers blocked for good.

I signed up to the federal do not call list the first day it was available. Sorry for all the phone operators who are going to get laid off, but it's time they found honest work. I hope the owners of these outfits spend their last days homeless under a highway bridge.

Although I normally simply let my answering machine screen incoming calls, I signed up on donotcall.gov as soon as it became available. The weight of public opinion is definitely overwhelmingly on the side of those of us who detest telemarketing.

bravo. let the telemarketers now push these people in our faces at the mall or at festivals, etc.

We have had it in Colorado the last year. Works great. The Attorney General has gone after errant companies with a vengeance, and they have folded and gone away - even out of state callers.

A few months ago there was a TV special showing how telemarketers are trained. There was a hidden microphone carried by one person as he was being instructed on how to get people to donate to a "charity" (one that gives a whopping .5% to the actual charity) that supposedly helped ******** adults. The instructor was teaching these healthy adults to sound ******** on the phone. After seeing that, I will never give a penny to any telefundraiser.

Making a living as a disabled or a single parent does not require interrupting my dinner to try to sell aluminum siding for my brick house.

Why should I be required to jump up and look at my caller id just because some computer decided to call me up to peddle something I don't want? I pay for my phone service. If I tell you not to call, then you should not call me. I would conservatively estimate that 99.99% of Americans do not want to receive any telemarketing calls.

The way I see it, the do-not-call list is a "No Trespassing" sign for my phone. I love it.

I think I heard something about the supreme court overturning the no-call list? Is that true? Either way, the calls have come to halt.

Wisconsin has had a do not call list for about a year or so, before I signed up I was getting 4-5 calls a week.
I have gotten exactly one call since it went into effect almost a year ago.
