I am new to the forum, so I am not sure even which section this belongs in.

So, I have a large touring bike with a Topeak baby seat and 5yo daughter.

The problem is that my daughter is reaching 46lb and is becoming quite tall for the seat. Her neck is still protected, it is the legs that are too long for the seat.

I am interested if someone has tried to modify the baby seat or came up with some other rear rack child contraption that is reasonably safe to accommodate a growing kid.

One of the ideas that I have is to cut off the leg portion of the seat and fabricate a motorcycle style foot rests that will attach to the frame.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

go with the Trail-a-bike option. Many of those seats are only rated to hold 40 pounds of kid and you certainly don't want it coming off the rack whilst riding.

Also, if you let her legs down further, won't they be in the way of you pedaling??

The problem is she can not yet sit by herself (needs side support). I also have to maneuver within a city traffic and curbs, so these things become quite dangerous. As for 40lb, I already have the seat bolted to the tack. Not a chance of it coming off!

Yes, this can be an issue, but my bike frame is quite tall, so with careful foot rest positioning I should be able to clear her toes for a while.
