View Full Version : Seeking Medical Advice on FOO

Just some thoughts about what I have seen taking place over the months here at FOO. I am not a Doctor but I stayed at a Best Western last night. If you have some odd malady or are wondering if you should have that spurting cut treated here is my advice. Go see a doctor.

This is not addressed to anyone in particular it is just an observation. If you are worried about your health why would you solicit answers in the lounge area of a bicycle board?

Truly, I am very curious as to why one might do this!:crash:

Ironically, because there is a wide range of experience here and generally, within the first post or so, someone always says "Go to the Doctor" anyway! My take is that often, they are looking for someone to just say that......

I have rivulets of pus flowing out of my eyes, the skin on my chest is sloughing off, my fingernails and toenails are turning black and falling off, it burns when I pee, and I can feel my teeth loosening. Also, my scalp itches.

So, my question is, should I take ibuprofen or acetaminophen to treat my condition?

Thanks in advance.

1. Because I can.
2. Because maybe someone has had a similiar experience.
3. Because foo is filled with-know-it-alls. :p
4. Because everyone loves hearing details about my bodily functions and problems.
5. Because pink is the new rainbow.
Etc, etc.

I never go to doctors.
Self surgery is where it's at.

I think it's because those people are afraid of what they might hear or are afraid of doctor/cannot afford doctor and are looking for a home remedy of sorts or some reassurance that it will be "okay".

Plus I think Merton started doing this and it caught on.

I suspect most people will go to a doctor, but because some doctors spend less than 10 minutes actually examining and talking with the patient, most people feel more comfortable trying to get a handle on possibilities so as to streamline the dialogue with the doc. To this end, it makes sense that many will ask friends if they've had a similar experience in the interim between making an appointment and going to the appointment. And, some of us happen to consider people on these forums to be friends. :)

I seriously doubt anyone self-medicates or self-treats based on advice or input offered here. But I'll bet they are able to better generate more specific questions for the doc. And sometimes doing so can help the doc to consider things he/she might have overlooked until a follow-up visit. I've had this experience myself, though at the time, I had gathered info at the local AHEC library because the Internet wasn't so replete with reliable medical and univerisity hospital sites at the time.

Lemony Pledge.

Does some kind of lemon-scented Pledge adhesive exist, so I can reattach my fingernails and toenails, and try to seal up the disintegrating flesh? I'll be sure to give the rest of it a good scrub with Pledge, though.

+1 on Vega's comments.

I'm one of those who came here to BF (and not specifically Foo) to ask about my knee problem. I wasn't expecting anything other than some replies from someone else who may have had a similar problem and could possibly inform me on what they did. What they did and what I did are or could be two different things. We all are so different, so what works for one may not work for another, but I just wanted to hear what others experiences were. I wanted to know what kind of injury others had, what they did for it, how long it took them to get back to riding their bike or whatever. It would give me a gauge as to possibly what I had in store as far as recovery. I didn't like a lot of what I heard - it could take months for my injury to heal and this was at the beginning of the cycling season. Long story short - it took and is gonna take as long as some (and my doctor) said it would....

Also, PATH, I consider several of the people here on Foo to be my friends (having met a couple this summer as well) and just wanted to hear what they thought and get their advice. 9 times outa 10 I'll do what's best for me, in my opinion, whether it coincides with the "advice" received here. That's my $0.02.

Oh and by the way, I did go see my doctor 2 months ago when I got injured and after getting the standard reply: Go see your doctor. Oh yea, I also solicited the advice of our resident doctor, DrPete :D

Why wouldn't someone ask if it's somehow related to or can be affected by cycling? There are plenty of cyclists who can help because they have been there. It's always useful to get some ideas before going in to see a doctor. For one thing, it's help you judge if what you will be told makes any sense, it helps streamline the questions, and also, it's hard enough to find a good doctor at all, let alone one who knows anything about cycling issues.

I eat lunch at the doctor's office almost everyday. I especially like it when the pharm reps bring the lunch. Then I get to talk to them about cool stuff like Gardasil and the newest Statin meds. At least it is adult conversation (I'm home with a 6yo all day).

I am not criticizing anyone in passing conversation about asking other people's opinions. I am just concerned when someone comes off a bike, bangs their cranium, complains of dizziness, and then asks if he/she should see a doctor.

I am having chest pains and I am unsure if it is a pulled muscle, reflux, or the beginning of a heart attack.

Auuugghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

Upset tummies and ouchie boo boos are one thing but serious maladies are something else. If it may be serious then go see a Doc. We can always chat about it later.

Just my .02 cents. Don't get angry with me please. I just like you folks too much to see anything bad happen to any of you!;) :)

One of my biking buddies who's a dentist put a big slash across his thigh with an industrial knife. He did it before work while cutting up a big box to set out with the trash. He wrapped his bleeding leg with duct tape to stop the bleeding. He started to drive himself to the hospital, and decided to stop off at his office and examine the damage so he could tell the doctors how serious it was.

He went and sat on his dental chair and dropped his pants after taking off the duct tape. It didn't look so bad with the bleeding stopped so he shot his leg with with novacaine and stiched the cut up with dental sutures. Then he took some sample antibiotics he had.

A few days latrer he got worried and went to the doctor. The doctor replied that everything was perfect.

The doctor my dad went to Monday apparently couldn't diagnose appendicitis... so he's in emergency surgery right now after it ruptured today. :(

There was one time when I almost got fooled, and the patient probably would've come back ruptured had the emergency room not ordered a CT scan--something they're frequently chastized for over-using.

All I'm saying is that it might not be that your dad's doc did anything wrong or was incapable of making the diagnosis--problem is it's not always that simple.

Hope your dad recovers quickly, though.
