So yeah, I bought this really expensive exclusive bike, yeah? Really nice ride.

I wasn't sure whether I wanted to keep the brand stickers on it, but after some advice decided not to have so many on there.

Then I was feeling regretful because others wouldn't know the name of the bike I was riding. I apparently care about making sure others know what I'm riding.

Then the other day, you know, like there were these other dudes riding the same bike, and they were snobs. zomg

Am I a hypocrite?

It's kind of difficult to have perspective here, as I have so many fanboys to make me feel good.

-------------

I really don't like it when I start a thread and somebody tears into me. It really bothers me that I can't have total control of the direction in which a thread goes. So I better just close it because, obviously, there's no point to allowing discussions in a public forum to go their own direction naturally.

Am I a guy that tries to cheat the filter?

Well actually, I WAS awaiting your friend's response the the challenge of making a custom frame in her spare time. This will now give her the chance! ;)

Siu if you are ever in my neck of the woods we can both take our Moots for a ride and no one will say nothin. Actually in fact about a month ago I met a guy on the road who commented me on my Moots and said he was from Colorado Springs etc... I did not read the whole thread but I hope you were not tempted to remove the decals. If you were and you did and you regret it I have a new complete set of decals that you are more than welcome to.

I just bought a new set of decals for my 83' Guerciotti. I can understand the OP's comments about riding a brand name around like your on display but in the case of the 83' Guerciotti they are a beautiful piece of history from a unique marquis and I could see the Moots being that one day too.

So I will have to disagree with your sig line :D I got my Moots used at a really good deal though still quite a bit of cash. But I figured I got this bike for the long run rather than Carbon Al bikes which I have broken after 4 years (please no carbon/AL materials analysis flame threads :) ) So expensive yeah but a bike to last a life time. Enjoy it and be proud of your decision to ride a modern classic.

What bikes have come into the shop the most with broken frames.

Hint, it's not MTBs
It's not aluminum bikes
It's not steel bikes.
and they usually rhyme with 'rightspeed'

OH heck, I don't remember now. The part I do remember is talking about frames and then you said you can build one in your spare time. There were one person who said they would pay for the supplies and then by the bike off of you (for your labor) if the geometry was right. I was honestly interested, actually impressed. Don't you remember? I was the one rooting you on!! I know that with your life experiences you have learned a lot and it would have been really great to see that frame.

I must have missed the part about buying materials and buying the resulting frame. And I don't remeber who was rooting me on and who wasn't. I appreciate the support however.

I don't doubt I could make a bike frame. The whole point of that thread is that it is possible for a relatively handy person to put together a decent(but not great) bike frame for a fraction of what custom builders do. In that thread I was attacked for even suggesting it. How dare I equate my hypothetical frame with that of the great frame builders? But the thing was I wasn't equating it, just saying I could do it for a fraction of the price and it would probably turn out rideable and decent. It wouldn't look like a Vanilla. I also never said I would weld it, but would use lugs. I don't doubt my welds would be ugly at best. I wouldn't spend three days polishing lugs either.

But still people continue to bash me for even suggesting that I could build a bike frame. It isn't mystical any more than building a deck is mystical and reserved only for the finest craftsman. I have built small outbuildings, built a deck, installed a pool, done tons of car repairs, done my own plumbing and electric, put up fences, installed roofing, refinished furniture, hung and taped drywall, etc... I have completely remodeled a bathroom including granite tile. I bet if I had posted that I thought I could do those things(before I did them) I would have been mocked too. After all, before I remodeled a bathroom, I had never remodeled a bathroom, so clearly I am not capable of doing things I have never done before.

I might someday build a frame. But right now I don't have the time, nor the money(saving right now) to put towards such a project for something I have no need for. I already have two bikes that suit me just fine. I have other hobbies that interest me far more than building a bike frame.

Also, I am starting my own business and taking graduate classes. If it is alright with you all, I will spend my time doing things to enhance my income and education rather than engage in a petty pissing contest. I know what I am capable of and have nothing to prove to you guys. I just find it sad that so many people revel in attempting to crush someone's spirit. I hope you don't carry this attitude over to child rearing. The most important thing you can do is to instill a spririt of "Yes I Can!" in your children.

Well, it looks aero. Maybe I should start making aero wheels out of duct tape to substitute for Zipp wheels. Duct tape comes pre-dimpled.

Ohhh I found it!

Apples and oranges. A full CF bike is not the same as a full steel bike. It is crazy to think that you can compare them. With a little training I could probably build a steel lugged frame in my spare time. I can pretty much guarantee I cannot build a monocoque CF frame in my spare time without A LOT of training and special equipment.

You impress me, slowandsteady. I wish I could build a bike. I had to go custom because I have a bulging disk in my back and need to have a more upright position in able to ride road. Because I ended up having to order custom I have to wait 12 weeks.

I wish I didn't have to spend the money or the time on this bike but it's what I need to do if I ever want to do road.

You know anything about building ti?

I am pretty sure I couldn't build much of anything for $10. Like I said in a previous post the lugs alone cost $20. I should be able to do it for $300 including paint by a pro.

Wow. I'll take you up on that. I'll pay the $300. I will also get a Waterford with the same specs. If your bike compares to the Waterford, not only will I publically proclaim the greatness of your skills, I will pay you the going cost Waterford would charge. PM me if you are game, if you are correct, it could be some easy money for you.

I don't think anyone is trying to crush your spirit. If anything, there was a lot of encouragement and even an offer of assistance via PM from one of the framebuilders. Like I said, I was truly interested and perhaps can learn a thing or two from you. As for the postive attitude, I'm always the one for it. I try my best to pass it over to those around me. Well.....that and a little bit of love. :)

Oh, okay. I probably didn't think they were serious with money. As I recall, I was pretty well mocked in the beginning of that thread. I didn't get any PMs from any framebuilders. But thanks for the encouragement. I taught my uncle in law how to use a drill a couple of weeks ago. That was pretty rewarding. He is deathly afraid of anything resembling handyman skills. Funny stuff.

I made a mistake. I think the offer of PM was from the person saying he'd buy the frame. But here is the offer of help from the frame builder:

I don't think I said you couldn't do it. In fact, I think you should absolutely do it. Keep track of your time, costs and items you produce to make your first bike and keep us in the loop as you do it.

There are many resources on the web that can help you (framelist.phred and frameforum)

There comes a time that you have to put up or shut up and I think you reached that time. I think for instance everyone should work in food service for a day to understand what it is like. It gives one an understanding of the other side if you will. For you, it might be to build a bike frame.

I will help you with advice if you wish.

Just to throw it out there. No matter what bike I'm riding, if I'm riding in a cotton t-shirt and cargo shorts, I can only expect a little disdain from club and pro riders. I do get a few looks since when I'm commuting, I wear MTB padded shorts instead of my lycra shorts, but it's usually from the Madone and high high end CF bike riders. Thankfully, I value my crotch, perhaps a bit too much, so I always ride with some sort of bike shorts.

That said, there is something to be said of a certain brand attracting "snobs."
