I started biking to work (once a week for now) and opted to use a backpack to take clothes with me, instead of keeping a set at the office. I've only ridden in a few times now, and about 3/4 of the way through my ride, my back starts to hurt. I know back pains aren't an unsual thing, especially if you've a backpack, but anyone got any suggestions on how to keep backpacking it without backaching it? Should the pack be at the small of my back, or higher up on my back? I dunno, I dunno...

BTW, I'm riding a road bike, 17 mile commute (each way), flat to rolling hills along the way.

Are you sure the backpack is the cause of the pain?

Have you previously ridden that distance without a backpack and had no pain?

Can you leave a pair of shoes and slacks at work to lower the weight you're carrying?

Also, I leave a towel, soap, shampoo and deodorant at work so that I don't have to carry as much.

Yeah, I think that's the way to go...I didn't want to have to deal with the leaving a pair of shoes, etc., but I already have a towel and the toiletries here, so I might as well leave a set of clothes here too. I've ridden these distances and much long with no back problems before...but these past commutes...man, I'm hurting after about mile 10.
