I have an option to buy a mid 80's Team Fuji bike. From the pictures the bike looks to be in good shape. I know that you always take a risk buying from someone you don't know out of state and I'm taking a risk with proper fitment. Besides this the seller states that the bike has Sugino crank???, with Suntour Supreme derailers and shifters(downtube). Brakes are Dia-Comp and the wheels are not marked but with Continental tires. He is selling it at $150 plus professional packing for $38. I have the pictures of the bike I can e-mail if anyone wants to look at it. Any suggestions welcome.

I put many miles on a fuji in the early 80's. Centuries, eastern Sierra mountain passes, commuting, etc. I was very happy with it. I don't remember what components it had, but I never had any problems.

Sounds like a good price to me.

That's why I am asking you guys for opinions. I don't know what it normally costs. He quoted me that price at $38 which includes shipping from Florida to Georgia. He said a bike shop would do it.

Fuji Teams were good bikes. My wife rode a late 70s version until recently. The bike still lives as a fixie I built for her brother.

You know the risks about fit so I won't go there.

Sugino made good cranksets. Their original Maxy wasn't anything special but, assuming everything is original, one that Fuji paired up with SunTour Superbe should be good. Many (myself included) would argue that the ST Superbe was as good as it got for friction shifting derailleurs.

Bottom line: $188 total for a used roadie is at the high end of the market to be sure and if you're willing to scour thrift stores and etc. you could do better. OTOH $188 for a quality bike that, if in good shape, still has many 1000s of miles left ain't bad either. If you don't feel like hunting around, go for it.
