I've heard of bike racks being connected to the rear bumper, etc behind or even in front of the license plate but I can't figure out how to do it. If you've done this, can you fill me in and provide photos if possible? Thanks in advance.

If you have a Saris Bones rack, for example, they recommend the lower feet rest on a relatively horizontal surface. On many cars that turns out to be the license plate well.

Merlin int roadie forum has one. Speaks highly of it but evidently there are some caveats to be aware of.

My bell rack was supposed to be mounted that way and so is my Yakima. I ended up letting it sit on the bumper because my barbed wire license plate frame kept tearing up the padding. It is not recommended to mount it that way, but then again I also habitually exceed the weight limit as well. For reference I have a 97 Mazda Protege and the top of the bumper is flat.
