It seems that Orange County Supervisor John Moorlach's office is currently doing a feasibility study to see if they should propose converting the SART to a senior citizen golf cart path, or some such fiddle faddle. Here's the response I got to my e-mail:
Dear Mr. BeerBiker:
Thank you for your e-mail.
We have not proposed anything at this point. One of our constituents has proposed such access, and we are only directing that the idea be studied by staff as part of the overall implementation of the Santa Ana River Park feasibility study. Should the concept not be feasible, then we would not be in favor of its implementation.

Chief of Staff
Supervisor John M.W. Moorlach

I strongly urge you to write Mr. Moorlach and let him know how you feel about the SART being taken over by golf carts. Please be polite, please be respectful, but please let him know what a POS idea this is. His e-mail is: John.Moorlach@ocgov.com
Thanks!

I've heard something about this once.
I hope it never happens otherwise it means no more time trials down the bike path...

Any part of the SART in particular? One talking point is that SART is the only legal bike access between Yorba Linda and Corona.

I've heard that the claim is the SART is not being utilized like some people think it should. I guess because it's not packed wheel to wheel with cursing, screaming cyclists every day, it's under utilized. That's why I think if enough people speak up while it's still in the "what if" stage, maybe it won't get very far.

Is there a link to this 'proposal' somewhere? I'd love to read what they think would be appropriate utilization.

As I understand it, there has been no "official" proposal except from a constituent to a county supervisor. They are doing a feasibility study to see if it warrants an official proposal. I know of a few friends that have e-mailed Moorlach and we've all gotten the same, word for word, boiler plate response I quoted above.

What's the problem? Let them use the SART between the hours of midnight and 4:00am.

Yes, I got the same boiler plate response today. In politics, its volume, so keep writing.
Only way that can work is if they widen the lanes for the portions used by the golf carts/motorized wheelchairs. Most golf carts have a max range of 18-24 miles. BUT they might be too wide for the existing bike path width for 2-way traffic. Golf cart is around 5-6 feet wide. Most bike paths are anywhere from 8-14 feet wide. It's an accident waiting to happen.

It would be a madhouse on the path. I agree it's an accident waiting to happen. And those seniors are armed with canes and sh!t.
