Well I rode my first metric century on Saturday morning... 64 miles in less than 4 hours with an average speed of exactly 17 mph... not too bad if I do say so myself... I coulda probably gone a little faster, but apparently I was going too fast for my group, and the ride leader, told me to slow my pace down a bit, as there were a few newbies riding with us, and I was going too fast for them to keep up... I think at that point I was riding around 18.5 mph.. I let the ride leader take over after that, and he kept my pace downa bit.. but not too bad...

The first half of the route took us 34 miles starting in Irvine, and working it's way down to Seal Beach, by the pier that is there, to a coffee place, for rest, and refreshments... I was feeling pretty good at that point, took about a 20-25 minute rest, got back on the bike and tore outta there trying to hunt down the main group, that left when I was in the bathroom... once I caught them I meandered down PCH at a decent speed.. around 22 mph or so.... then tragedy struck...

I came across a group of our club's riders, and one of them was sitting ont he curb... a 65 year old guy named Ron was sitting down, his hand on his chest.. apparently he was having severe chest pains... Jess, our ride leader, rolled up, and immediately called 911 on his cell phone... I usually carry mine, but completely forgot today... we waited for the ambulance to arrive, Jess told us to go ahead and take off... there were a few people that hung out, but there wasn;t anythng we coulda done at that point.. so we left...

I received email this morning, that he did suffer a heart attack, and is undergoing tests at the hospital now... I hope he is doing well... I had only talked to him once in the parking lot, but seemed a pretty good guy...

I pulled onto the rear wheel of a guy named Eric that I had met... only a few years older than me, which is rare, since the average age in this group is about 45-50 I'm guessing, he told me to hang on his back wheel, and we'd make up some time flying down thru Huntington Beach, on our way back to Irvine... Ok.. this guy Eric can fly.. I kept up with him for a little while.. but my legs can only spin so fast, and when I was going 28 mph in the flats on PCH, I swear my legs were gonna fall off... I let him go ahead... I caught him at the next signal.. jokingly he said "Where'd ya go ?" I laughed and told him i can't ride that fast... he was cool with it... he normally rides with Ironman Triathlete guys... so he dropped his pace a bit.. to about 23-4 mph, and we rolled back to the park...

All in all it was a good ride.. it was the farthest I have ever ridden in one day.. so I was pretty proud of myself... now I just have to work on the 100 mile ride... I guess there is going to be one in August... I didn;t feel too much muscle soreness the next day.. a bit stiff... bot not horribly bad at all...

Congratulations on your metric century! Now it's time to aim for the imperial century, right? ;)

Sorry to hear about your friend. I hope he ends up ok, and please keep us updated on what's going on with his condition.

will do Koffee...

and BTW.. congrats on your Imperial... that is my next step... I'd love to be able to do an imperial in under 6 hours, but we'll see... I know my bike club is doing another of their "flatland" centuries next month... much like the one I did saturday... no real hills until about mile 54 or so... I thought I was gonna crack on a couple.. but overall it was mostly flat... and that is all good with me :-)

I'd love to be able to do an imperial in under 6 hours

I'm feeling lucky I could get that century done in under 12 hours! To do it in 6 means I would be about ready to race in the Tour myself!

Update us when you get to the imperial century!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery for the fallen rider.

Thanks for posting. I lived in Huntington Beach during my high school years (1964-68) and enjoyed reading about some of my old haunts.

I rode the first bit of the San Diego Longriders' weekly century yesterday and realized how much more time I would have to train to get back into distance riding. During the past few years, I have only occasionally exceeded a metric half-century!
