Is anyone here near Johnson City? I've seen hardly any cyclists lately (I did see one today though).
Hello Ralph12,
I live in Kingsport, TN. I mostly ride some of the back roads around Kingsport, and in Virginia. Where do ya like to ride and what kind of riding do ya like to do (speedy, pack rides, hills, etc...)?
You should check out a ride called the Tour de Possum this weekend (July 14). It is part of the FunFest activities Kingsport does every summer. The Tour de Possum "race" will be a 46 mile ride with some small hilly parts. It is mostly for fun but the race times are posted for everyone. You may have known all this already but I thought I would throw it out just in case. A lot of bikers in Kingsport have been riding this Tour de Possum route everyday for the past two weeks. You go over to the start area and there are always tons of cars.

That sounds pretty cool, thanks for mentioning it. I'd like to do something like that but I doubt I'm fit enough for 46 miles in a day yet (I've only been riding for a year). I could probably manage 'round 30-35. Then again, with some more training it seems like a possibility.
I do most of my riding in Johnson City/Gray, and a little in Sullivan county. I'd say I average about ten miles/day, and I'm mostly a utility cyclist, riding for inexpensive transportation through town and the suburbs. That's the main reason why I bought a bike; I didn't know I'd get more into longer rides or riding for sport when I first stepped out of Piney Flats bikes with my new Raleigh.

Hey...I live in Dryden, VA, near Pennington Gap and Big Stone Gap, VA (it is about a 90 minute drive to JC by car) and have visited JC a few dozen times over the years.
I rode bikes as a kid and have now, 20 years later (at age 43), picked up the bike habit again. I've been back into biking for about 17 months and have gotten a bit more serious about performance and proper fit than when I was a kid (back then I rode whatever bike I was given, or whatever $80 bike that caught my eye at the X-mart). I am mostly into road bikes for pleasure, exercise, and commuting. I usually do two rides a week (15 -20 miles a ride), pretty small, I know, compared to most riders on this site). I see very few adults in this area riding bicycles (I have seen a few riders in and around Big Stone Gap, VA decked out in full "Lance Armstrong" riding cloths but even those sightings have been rare).
There is no bike shop near me. I did a search on the internet, found, and visited the bike shop in Piney Flats about a year ago and was impressed by all the bike items they had. I wish that shop (and the one in Kingsport) wasn't so far away. I have ordered several bike items from internet sellers and have often been disappointed when I actually got the item. Do you visit the Piney Flats shop a lot? Are you still riding the Raleigh? Is your Raleigh a road or mtb?
