I just purchased my first headset--a cane creek S-6 from nashbar---i apologize if this is a silly question. I am comparing my hardware to the "exploded" diagram in the instruction manual and it appears I am missing a piece. The diagram says I am suppossed to have a lower seal (item 10) that is pictured as a seperate item from the crown race (item 11). However the product description states that the S-6 comes with an crown race with integrated seal. My question is whether itwm 10 and 11 --the rubber seal and the crown race---are a single piece or if the seal is suppossed to be a seperate piece.

thanks

On the S-8 and IS-8 I've used, the crown race came with the seal attached to it (it's the black rubber ring around the outside widest part of the race). Perhaps it's replaceable so it shows up as a separate piece on the diagram. When the race comes out of the package, though, it and the seal are a single piece.

I recently purchased an S6 from Nashbar as well. The lower seal was affixed to the lower race. The installation instructions direct you to install the lower seal if applicable. I don't think it's applicable to the S6. I think they are generic instructions intended for most Cane Creek headsets.

gotcha---thanks. what confused me was that the diagram showed the seal seperate and said (S-6 only)---but if its one piece i'm golden------thankfully they sent me spacers even though the product description specifies no spacers

I called Crane Creek when I got my S-6 earier this year from NASHBAR. Seems like these are late manufactured units and they have the newer seal of the latest version of their Race. This lower race also is a SPLIT Race and will go on without the need for tools, or at least mine did. I have about 500 miles on my bike build so far and NO Issues with the headset. It's a very nice piece for the money.
