Cyclist 'punches' 87-year-old man

An 87-year-old man has been punched in the head and face after getting into an argument with a cyclist on the NSW mid-north coast.

The pair initially exchanged verbal barbs as their paths crossed on Harbour Drive in Coffs Harbour at about 10.45am (AEST) on Tuesday.

Police said the 57-year-old man parked his bike and returned to the elderly man, punching him in the head and face.

The cyclist then got back on his bike and rode off.

The elderly man was treated for cuts and bruises.

The alleged attacker was arrested yesterday and charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was refused bail in Coffs Harbour Local Court and remanded to the same court on September 3.

That'll show the old man!

Was the cyclist Ruth Buzzi and was the old man the guy on the park bench in the Laugh In skits from the 1960s?

Turns out that a$$holes ride bikes too.

Remember that to the media, the phrase 'cyclist' applies to someone on a bicycle. I think people are thinking someone like me, in a jersey, helmet and spandex, hit some old man. In all reality, it is probably one of the DUI 'cyclists'. Probably some drunk, that just happened to be on a bike, fighting with another guy that he knew. I don't call a guy like that a 'cyclist'; I call him 'some dude on a bike with no helmet'.

We even had a homeless guy riding a bike around Louisville for several weeks, complete with his own 2-liter urinal strapped to the side :) - oh, yeah, no joke there. My wife was like, "Why does he need to carry around his p*ss on a bike?" Geesh! He had quite a lot of stuff strapped onto his bike, like a little motor home. I don't consider that guy a 'cyclist', either. Just a homeless guy on a bike.

It's true that all persons while mounted on a bicycle are indeed cyclists regardless of gender, age, religion....class, national origin etc.

Some guys have a fetish about wee-wee; others have one about Styrofoam hats. I don't think either obsession defines a cyclist.

Well, if carrying the piss bottle is the best alternative he's found to urinating in an alleyway, then I wish the idea would catch on around here.

As I was reading down the thread I was thinking, "around here, 'cyclist' in the media is refering to MOTORcyclists!" :p

The World Grand Prix is in town next weekend. (BIG time motorcycle racing!)

But I always thought of motorcycle riders as "Bikerz" & bicycle riders as cyclists.
