Professional Cycling For the Fans - SPOILER (kind of) What do you think of Cancellara

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Did anybody watch today?

He was leading the pack coming into town when he followed a Disco off the road. Unfortunately for him, he lost what looked like ten or fifteen spots. Then, if you look at the finish, he is right there sitting in like tenth position again. I think he's getting kind of cocky.

Anybody think he could've pulled off another fast one had he avoided the error?

Popo mis-judged the turn too---does that make him cocky? Cancellara saw an opportunity to keep his jersey, and was pushing it on the descent. That doesn't make him cocky, it makes him a racer!

He was doing a lot more than protecting his jersey. The 72nd man across the line got the same time as him and Pozzato. He crossed 12th which meas he was fighting until the end. I think that he's trying to win races, not protect his jersey. If he were concerned with winning the tour, he would've played it safe.

That being said, "cocky" is probably the wrong word.

+ popovych isn't wearing yellow and hasn't already won two stages.

Hornbiker

Yeah, you're right on both counts. But he's going to lose his jersey soon, so I still don't think it's cocky to have winning another stage on the brain. Maybe tenacious over cocky. I respect it, much more interesting to watch than if he was playing it safe.

...this is basically what I was trying to say. I don't think he will hold the jersey, and to be honest I don't really want him to. I just like to see this sort of thing.

I'm enjoying his performance. Didn't really know him prior to this race.

I'm enjoying his performance.

All I have to say is that between his little sprint the other day and his performance today, he is showing just how well he can perform. However, if he was American they would be saying he was doping. :p

Seriously. That xx seconds lead is going to turn into an xx minutes deficit soon enough.

I was certain that Cancelara would win the time trial because if how short it was but what he has done so far has been spectacular and has made the first part of the tour that much more exciting.

He's really shown why he can play in the classics. and not just a 1 trick pony

Cancellara is working on his sprint. He tried to outsprint boonen earlier this year. I thought he was crazy then. Now, not so sure. The other thing is, he is trying to stay up frotn and avoid crashes. Nothing wrong with that.

Cancellera was indeed trying to break away from the pack on the downhill... it was an awesome move. He and popo were lucky they ran off a soft spot on the road.

If you're finishing 10th on a sprint finish, you're not playing it safe. Being in the top 10 in the last 3k is safe... in the last 100m, there's guys flying from one side of the road to the other.

In the words of David Allen Coe. "I will hang around as long as you will let me!!!"
I agree with ya. A bold move that might have won the stage had he not run off the road. He's very game but all the smart money says the mountains will get him. I do enjoy his style and wish him the best.

I am glad I am not the only one who was happy to see Cancellara out and enjoying his days in yellow! :)

Instead of cockiness, I think it was him just trying to prove that he can do it somewhere other than time trials (which he has IMO shown us).

"Owned?"

No one, including Cancellara himself, expected him to a) do well in the mountains or b) be a serious GC contender. If that was the goal, he'd never have gone for the yellow in the first 2 weeks.

Nor does the fact that he's not a climber in any way detract from his achievements in this tour. A good long run in Yellow, superb prologue, and outstanding defense of the jersey in Stage 3 are quite respectable for any pro.

b) alot of people gave him way too much credit saying how great it was how long he held the jersey and were really anxious to see if he could hold it.

If you don't appreciate the tour ridden so far by FC then I don't know what to say. He has ridden a great tour, and is one heck of a rider. Not every rider out there is a GC contender in grand tours.

I never said I don't appreciate what he has done. Obviously MUCH more than anyone on these forums can accomplish. He is a strong rider and will drop any of us on any climb, BUT to consider him a GC contender is not very intelligent. IMHO

Everyone who knows anything about the Tour knows this was going to happen including himself. Might even be lower tomorrow when it's all done.

But everyone who follows cycling seriously will remember his name. His team and CSC are thrilled about the week of coverage he got.

He'll command bigger bucks at next year's tour.
