Foo - Tanning

Anyone here ever go tanning? Probably sounds stupid to some but I have crazy tan lines from cycling. I am tan from my wrist to elbow and from my anke to knee. The rest of me is white.

I have never been tanning (im a guy) and would like to go atleast once to blend together some of the lines.

How does the process work?
Do you put on sunscreen?
Is it hot?
Clostrophobic?
I assume you go in naked?

Any info would be great. Thanks

Go in naked. Get undressed in the parking lot and go in the front door with just a bottle of sunscreen.

Actually they send you to a private room. You can undress as much or little as you like. If you are a little clostrophobic, it may not be what you want to do. It is a little confining and it does get warm. But you're all alone so do whatver you like :)

Having had another form of cancer, I am not deluded into believing that it could never happen to me. Be proud of your cyclist tan, slather on the sunscreen, and get the thought of tanning beds out of your head.

Agreed. I slather on as much sunscreen as possible when I go riding and still have tan lines

A 29-year-old Salford mother of two has died of skin cancer thought to have been caused by excessive sun bed use, the Manchester Evening News reports.
Zita Farrelly's two-sessions-per-day "addiction" started at 14. She kicked the habit at 21, but by then it was "too late". Last August, she discovered a mole which turned out to be melanoma. Nine months later, and just three days after daughter Phebie's first birthday, she died.


Doctors told the victim's family they believed "it [the cancer] was caused by using sun beds". Her partner Phil Burtwistle said sun beds had "destroyed the family's life". He told the Manchester Evening News: "Zita told me days before she died that she wished she could make a documentary about the dangers of using them. She said if only one person was saved by seeing what had happened to her she'd be happy. People need to know that they can be that dangerous."
Burtwistle explained that Farrelly was determined to see her daughter's birthday and had "battled on and managed to keep herself awake to see that". He continued: "But not long after she fell asleep and never woke up again."
Farrelly's aunt Tina "appealed for others to learn from her niece's death", warning: "Time after time I see young girls coming out of tanning salons burned and looking like lobsters. I feel like grabbing them and telling them about what can happen. If they could see the pain that Zita had to go through I'm sure it would make them stop using them."

Simple.

Take up lap swimming in an outdoor pool.

Use lots of sunscreen.

Go everyday.

Swim at least 1 hour.

I lived in the Dallas area from '01 to '06 and one of the things they have a lot of were tanning salons. I never understood the purpose of these places since instead of wasting $$ to sit indoors to tan all you had to do was stand outside for a while and you'd be tan wether you liked it or not! It's HAWT in Texas! Although it's pretty rainy right now... But still!

On a side note... a former co-worker had a friend that went tanning and when she did she went completely nekid. One day she went in and noticed that through the one way glass this maintenance guy was just out there just hanging in front of the store. But she thought nothing much of it until she finished and walked outside to her car. What she thought was a one way glass was actually clear to both sides and realized that the maint. guy outside was watching her totally nekid the whole time! DOH! :o

Wear your bicycle tan with honor :D

You can pick up anouther outdoor sport. My glove tan lines are barely noticable due to all the frisbee I play, so instead of a biking tan, mine looks more like just a regular farmers tan. However I bike in Lake Sandals, so I have quite the Jesus tan on my feet.

While it's highly treatable, skin cancers are typically not included in statistic of cancer because they occur with such a great frequency that they would dwarf the other stats of less detectable/treatable forms.

ONE MILLION new cases in 2007. wear your damn sunscreen.

SPF 50, UV A/B protection all over. Reapply as per manufacturer's recommendations. Lay out. 20 minutes later flip over. Repeat. Build it up in stages, your torso, upper arms and thighs will burn if you try to tan in day.

Swimming in a pool for an hour is just as good, all the water reflects the rays back but remember the waterproof sun blocker.

Tanning from 11am to 3pm can easily result in sunburn if you aren't careful. Stay hydrated - drink lots.

Also while wearing SPF 30 or whatever you will still get tan? Does the SPF stop you from getting tan?

Higher SPF cuts down on the tan. 30 should do unless you are ghost white. You will always get some sun no matter what you are wearing. Unless it's that Ozone stuff. I hear that stuff is like being covered up.

if you're not used to the sun or have a fair skin then you can burn with SPF50 if you're out long enough. Admittedly you do build up a "tolerance" as you get more tanned and so less likely to burn immediately.

There are 300 million people in this country, do your damn math. My stats are exactly the same as yours, only mine were expressed in percentages. Having a funky looking mole removed counts in those one million cases. You really only need to fear the melanoma cases which are fractions of a percent. Hold onto the damn railing you are far more likely to die falling down the steps.

Like I said, a little sun is fine. But don't go end up looking like this and you will be fine in 99.9998% of the cases. What else in life has those kinds of odds???

Used to tan heavily for a few years, don't feel like it anymore.

If you want things to match why not try a spray tan? Wouldn't it be a lot safer? A co-worker gets sprayed about every six weeks for about $25 and it looks good on her.

Ah, the spray-on tan. For that fresh-from-the-orange-tree glow that other citruses would die for!

I use the Neutrogena spray tan sometimes. It works okay but never lasts very long....about a week or so. But it is a good alternative. I wonder what is in the commercial spray tans that make it last 6 weeks??? Your skin would have sloughed off several times over in that time frame.
