I have a big race this weekend. The race of the year is more like it. But I was giving HEED to drink. She told me to start drinking 1h befor and during. Well I will run out of the Heed so I thought of my second bottle be full of strong Powerade.

Will the sugar in Powerade mess me up or will it give me a sugar high? The race is 25mile, and Im hoping for 1hour 40min, MTB race.

Thanks Leo

It's impossible to get a sugar high/spike when you're working that hard.

I don't race, but if I did, I think I'd tend to stick with whatever I usually drink during training rides. I'd avoid the possibility of drinking something I'm not accustomed to, and having my performance suffer as a result.

There's nothing wrong with sugar per se, but powerade uses high fructose corn syrup. Fructose takes longer to absorb from the digestive system (it uses a different transport than other sugars), and is only converted to glucose in the liver. It's also really, really sweet, which means that you're unlikely to be able to stomach enough during exercise.

So, with powerade you get:

1) Poor absorption (with the change of GI upset)
2) Poor utilization
3) Not enough fluid.

Don't change anything before a race....

:)

I had to say it even though you wont listen..

Last week I was reading something from Hammer Nutrition that stated if you drank or ate something high in sugar it would cause issues with your body's absorption of HEED. I can not seem to find the article. Maybe someone else can speak to this.

Tanks for all the help. It turns out I didnt need to use powerade because I had enough HEED. My team leader, who was a Nationals Champ, said it would work better then that koolaid I drink now. During the race I had great power and stanima, during the first hour. Then with 20min untill the end with a for sure 2nd but possably 1st, I cramped. I new I would but I thought It would be late enough I could ride thru.

It was a very long race and Im happy with my result.
