Williamsburg, Brooklyn NY - Bikers Rack Up Prime Spot At Train Station.

Williamsburg, Brooklyn NY - The city for the first time has removed street parking spots to free up space for bicycle racks, creating a park-and-ride hub for cyclists outside the Bedford Ave. subway station on the L line in Williamsburg.

City Transportation Department workers on Tuesday anchored six large bike racks to a concrete slab extending from the sidewalk into N. Seventh St. - another sign of the department's focus on giving a higher priority to cycling and encouraging motorists to leave their cars at home.

"It's the first time but certainly not the last that we will be removing space for cars to make space for more eco-friendly alternatives," department spokeswoman Molly Gordy said. "We will be looking for more subway stations that lend themselves to doing this." [dailynews]

I'm not really familiar with Williamsburg. Is that even an area that I'd consider leaving my bike locked up for an entire day?

It's nice to see the city make these kinds of strides though, nevertheless.

Your biggest worry in Willieburg is getting sneered at by the poseur hipsters. ;)

Still, I wouldn't leave an Orbea Orca out there all day every day.

Jabsin, I think that is where the $59 huffy comes into play. I wonder how it works out, and I wonder why they didn't put one rack at 6 train stations instead of putting six at one station, lots of confidence I guess.

Nice step though.

That spot's been a point of contention - there are usually many bikes (so I read) chained to whatever and the police come and cut them all off.

After hearing about the NYC officialdom's general attitude towards bikes, I think the bike racks might be a mixed blessing. Now they will have an excuse harass anyone who locks a bike up elsewhere: "Why don't you use the new racks we have provided?"

You'd definitely want a beater bike for that.
