I need some info on a route from Fallbrook to Oceanside. I've been searching around and have found a couple of convoluted routes. If anyone has a route, I'd really appreciate it. On Sunday, I'm riding from Murrieta to Temecula, up Rancho CA Rd to Sandia Creek Road and into Fallbrook, so my hills are taken care of. I need a pretty direct route to the coast since my destination is Encinitas.
As always, thanks for the help!

I do that ride every year (Fallbrook all the way back to the Sea World area) with the AYH christmas trip. I think we take main out of town and then mission, then we get on a bike path that gets us to the coast and then just follow the coast down. I'll pm you details when I get home and can find a route sheet.

I just took a look at google earth-- I think it's Mission -> North River Road -> Vandegrift/north river road -> left on College and go about 500 yards to a bike path (completely isolated from the roads) that starts on the south side of the street and will take you all the way to oceanside. The exit from the path is a little tricky.

I rode from Oceanside to Fallbrook today for lunch.
BD is right. That's the best way to get to Oceanside. The following is a partial route slip from the SD 200k Brevet. I only posted the part from Fallbrook to Oceanside. The first column is the total miles at that point; I'm not motivated enough to remove it.
62.9 1.2 Turn RIGHT Across I-15 to stay on US-395 then BEAR LEFT to stay on US-395
64.1 2.7 Turn RIGHT (South-West) onto CR-S15 [Reche Rd]; water on right in Live Oak Park
66.8 2.6 Bear RIGHT (North) onto (S) Live Oak Park Rd
69.4 5.7 Turn LEFT (West) onto CR-S13 [E Mission Rd]
75.1 8.0 "CONTROL #2: LEFT into Dominick's Sandwiches [1672 S Mission Rd, Fallbrook (760) 728-7911].
(across from Best Western Inn) Open 10:34am - 3:04pm"
83.1 2.3 Turn RIGHT (West) onto SR-76 [Mission Rd]
85.4 4.1 Turn RIGHT (North-West) onto N River Rd
89.5 0.3 Turn LEFT (South) onto Vandegrift Blvd
89.8 0.1 Turn LEFT (East) onto College Blvd
89.9 0.1 Turn RIGHT into parking area
90.0 6.6 Continue STRAIGHT (West) onto Bike Path; be sure to take underpasses to the right; stay on bike path until it ends

96.8 0.2 Turn RIGHT (South-West) onto Surfrider Way
97.0 2.0 Turn LEFT (South-East) onto S Pacific St
99.0 0.1 Turn LEFT (North-East) onto Cassidy St

Man...you really are grumpy!
Thanks, GP! That info is exactly what I was looking for. I'm looking forward to the ride Sunday.

sweet, i grew up in fallbrook!
here is a great ride my friend and i used to do when i lived there. not the most direct route, but very nice, very scenic. some hills, but nothing crazy.
head south on mission road, away from town, toward the high school.
turn RIGHT on Olive Hill
about 2 miles up, olive hill makes a sharp right turn and then turns into Burma Road
stay on Burma, then
turn LEFT on Sleeping Indian, go about 5 miles. this is where the hills are. nothing like De Luz (sandia creek) but some.
turn RIGHT on North River Road, go a little over 2 miles and
turn LEFT on Vandegrift.
turn LEFT on College. College is a bit of a climb, nothing crazy.
turn RIGHT on CA-76 and you're home free to the coast.
if you want a more direct route, you can take South Mission all the way to the 76, but that's no fun and it's all flat. let me know, i can make a route on that website.

the use of a mirror on N River Road might be helpful. During rush hour when motorists are trying to avoid the backup on the 76, traffic can be dangerous. And some motorists display little respect for cyclists who get in their way. Some might even prefer to head up Vista Way and head west on Bobier Ave. ( where there is a wide bike path.?)
here, i mapped the route, starting from where you get spit out of De Luz.

watch out. The time I was spat at was at the redlight directly in front of Fallbrook H.S.
ANother possiblity, want a little hill work. Check out the route thru Sleeping Indian. Nice little ride. Comes out on No RIver Road. Want a real workout. Head back to Fallbrook on Sleeping Indian. One heck of a climb. Pretty steep stuff.

Dave, where did you live in FB? My sister lives on the east side of town up the hill from the Circle K.

not sure i'd bother riding on 76 with a nice, quiet bike path along the river.

oh yah. Burma Rd. I tried to open the map, DD. But, when it took awhile to download, I gave up too quickly. It's a better workout going into Fallbrook. I always am cautions at the base of Sleeping Indian and River road. A friend of mine lost control near the base and was hurt pretty badly. Especially don't like that barb wire fence just off the road.
dang, that sucks. a good story about that big downhill on sleeping indian.. in high school we used to steal the big rolling trash cans with the flip-top lid and ride them down that hill. i think the fastest any of us got was my friend darren at 32 mph.

our friend was hurt big time. Hit a rock near the bottom. Broke a rib. After that I slowed down on the descent. Think I've seen roller coasters with less grade. W/o braking, you easily be going in the 30/s.

Thanks to all for the help! I basically rode my usual route from Wildomar (I've got to be THE only rider in the 92595 zip code, by the way!) to Rancho CA-Sandia Creek-Fallbrook. From Fallbrook, I followed DD's map to Oside and then to Encinitas. 63 miles of great riding conditions: climbing, followed by rolling hills and TERRIFIC scenery. The tip to follow Olive Hill to Sleeping Indian was right on! Just a great workout. I hit just over 50 mph down Sleeping indian. What a great descent! Not better than the winding descent on Sandia Creek that puts you right along the creek just prior to ascending into Fallbrook. I hit over 50 mph on that also. I can't seem to get to 51 mph; although, it is possible. The turns in the descent are just too sharp for me to let the bike go all the way.
This route will definitely become a once a month ride. It's so great to leave the heat of the IE behind and enjoy the coastal weather. Plus, this ride had everything you could want: steep climbs, steep descents (one technical & one straight), rolling hills with great scenery, then the ocean sprint from Oside to Encinitas).
My wife and kids met me in Encinitas for great pizza (very welcome after several gel packs), a 6-pack of Skinny Dip, and a day in the sun at the beach.
The ONLY downside is a big mean dog that has charged me once before on Sandia Creek just before the creek crossing that heads into Fallbrook. This dog nearly got a friend and me before (if there wasn't a slight downhill, he would have got us for sure!). This time I was just warning another friend who was riding with me, when that damn dog charged again. The owner was right there: big fat belly, wearing a wife-beater tank top. One thought: THE scene from the movie Deliverance! He did nothing. One of these days...
sounds good. what's the weather like in wildomar these days? i am so glad i moved out of temecula.

This summer has been really nice, unlike last year. I ride my bike to work during the summer, so I was really worried about riding home when it's like 106 or so. It has only been over 100 for 3 days.
Still, I miss the coast--Ventura County native--but median home prices at half a million for a 30-40 year old home in a renter's neighborhood forced the move inland. I enjoy the location for the most part--Summer heat is always a drag, though. I really loved the Fallbrook area that i rode through (outskirts of town), but I know how SD county home prices are.
fallbrook is such a rad place.
