Mountain Biking - Another bike question

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I have managed to saveup around $800 to buy a new MTB. I did not have a chance to go try any out this weekend but am wondering if I decide I want to upgrade later are frames in theis price range worth it. I am going to look at a Kona Lava Dome this week and the fork it comes with gets very bad reviews. It is the EXR comp. Also going to look at some others like Specialized and Trek. Anyway thanks in advance for answers or tips.
Thanks
Matt

Give a look at the Gary Fisher bikes. I bought the Tassajara last weekend and am very pleased with it so far. With 800 you could get a higher version with better components and lighter frame. The Big Sur I think is in that price range. I really like the Genesis geometry of their frames. It's worth a checking in to.

Nowadays, you could easily get an $800 hardtail with a frame worth upgrading and keeping for a while. I would check out offerings expecially from Giant or Specialized. Many people are happy with their Rockhoppers. Save up another couple hundred, and you could get a decent FS.

Trek 8000! :D I like the longer top-tube geometry as compared to most other makers in the same price range.
Matt, what is your height and weight? What type of riding will you be doing?
I am 6'2 and 180 lbs. The bike will be for mainly flat trail riding since that is all we have around here. It will also be used for riding to work a few times a week. I have an old Trek 6500ZX and I like it but the fork sucks(RS Indy) and other parts are wearing out. I figure I am better off getting a new bike than putting $300-400 into this bike.
Thanks
Matt
