Pedal question

I need new pedals for a recently bought Sunn Cycloss and am intending to go with platforms, w/o clips & straps at least for the present. Any suggestions? Would bmx pedals (e.g. wellgo mg-1 on this page http://www.wellgo.com.tw/product.asp?category=bmx ) be a massive faux pas?

any advice would be appreciated.

boooo! go clipless! :)

OR... get something like shimano PD-M324's which have a platform on one side and clipless on the other... or the 424's or 627's. This way, you can ride with regular shoes, or ride clipless (which you really want to do, but just don't realize it yet :D).

I don't want to go clipless b/c I have knee problems at the moment and do not want to exacerbate them by testing clip positions now ...

I'm not sure how properly set-up clipless pedals could damage your knees. Eggbeaters have TONS of float and are pretty much idiot proof. That said, I would choose high-quality flats like the ones you posted over the generic ones with reflectors.
You should really check out the Crank Bros. Mallets (http://www.crankbrothers.com/mallet.php). They are flat but have clipless "egg beaters". You can always buy some clipless shoes to go with them later.

These look really nice. Somehow I feel inclined to go clips & straps over clipless pedals though, mostly b/c much of my riding is done in contexts where I have something else to do at the other end or halfway, and so flexibility in shoes is a plus ... Needs some thought I think. Maybe these Mallets are the way to go. Now I just have to find a pair for cheap ... :)

My experience has been that clipless is a great way to avoid knee problems, becuase your knee and leg are kept in the same plane throughout the stroke. Platforms and to a lesser extent, clips, allow you to move your leg around to such a degree that you increase the shear forces on your knee. Clipless pedals and good shoes seem to reduce those forces, and if your knee problem is lateral instability or pain, you might find clipless to be the perfect solution.

That is a good point. Most of my pain has gone away now but it does seem to involve lateral movement. Maybe I should rethink.

If you choose the right mountain bike shoe, you can just walk around in the shoe without worrying about the cleat interference.

I bought these shoes for my everyday/commuting use. I love them. They're well-made, comfortable to walk in and no one would ever notice they're cycling shoes unless they saw the cleats. I wear them to work almost every day (office casual). Affordable too, $50 online, but I've seen them for as low as $39. Oh, they're Shimano MT20's.

I even raced like this last year in cross & in duathlons. I ride with my running shoes all the time :D

I was in same boat. I even thought of getting those platform clipons. I do a lot of riding in flip flops because I live close to ocean ande hence the need for platforms. Of course if someone knows of a clipless systems for flip flops...send it here! ;P

I removed one of the clipless brackets and now, it's one side platform, one side clipless.
seem alright so far. Sort of a trade off between large mtn bike pedal and the smallish road pedals I had on my Kona JTS. The other options people have suggested are nice too just a bit more $$$.

yes, eventually I will go clipless when I become more comfortable with a bike with gears. This is first real bike I've had in ten years or so!

btw, you may want to consider possibly a skate style shoe with SPD clips. I'm thinking of going that route or the mtn bike shoe route. I just hate carrying around a bunch of shoes when I ride over to gfs for the weekend.
