what the hell is an e-type BB?
Im thinking of upgrading my drivetrain to some DeoreLX stuff over the winter, and want to change out everything from shifters all the way back, including the BB. What is the difference between an e-type BB compared to a non-e-type
something like these two:
seem to be the same part but one is E and the other is not

e-type is when you mount the front deraileur to the bottom bracket istead of the down tube. You use these on dual suspensions that have little or no downtube to work with.
I am sure you know what a regular bottom bracket is :)

Isn't that the one that was used on 60's Jaguars
(e-type) or XKE for the yanks?
can i use an e-type front der. with any bb? or does the bb have to be e-type as well?

bb has to be e-type to I believe.
An e-type bottom bracket is basically a normal bottom bracket except that the shoulder on the cup that gets threaded into the frame is thinner to compensate for the mount of the front derailleur. (the mount is what gets sandwiched between the frame and shoulder) I have used e-type front derailleur on normal bottom brackets but would prefer to use e-type to get the spacing of the chainrings and crank back to where they should be. You also need a frame that is e-type compatible. The front derailleur bolts up to the frame by the bottom bracket to keep the derail from rotating. There is a threaded boss on the frame for this. I use it on my OCLV mtb frame to protect the area from the dreaded chainsuck.
you can use e types on most bottom brackets, you just have to leace some space for the derraileur.
