Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - A use for downtube shifter bosses on conversions ...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

On road bikes you'll frequently see barrel adjusters mounted on those bosses for the derailleurs, but what to do if it's "just" a ss/fg conversion? I've been wondering about a solution for awhile now (other than just leaving them as is), so it's time to ask the masses. Maybe someone knows of some random product or has come up with something at home that proved itself useful. They're a bit unsightly just sticking out so if they can be put to some functional use that'd be fantabulous.

Non-destructive solutions, please.

Put the shifters back on it. Make sure when you pass a roadie to shift your fixed gear. Making a clicking noise would be icing on the cake.

Or slowly turn the shifter as you increase your cadence and make a laser charging sound a la Cadet Larvell Jones

put the shifters back on and use them for break levers. of course, you will have to bore out the cable holes, then figure out how to route them to your breaks and everytime you break you will need to quickly reach down and push the levers, but it would clean up your handlebars a bit.

Hang some dingle balls from them. All the real hipsters do that. I mean, if you can ride around town with your balls hanging out, how cool is that?

I saw a ssmtb once where a guy put some novelty valve caps on his brake bosses. You could put some tireflies on there! +1 on the footpegs
