General Cycling Discussion - Riding while Pregnant
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Thought I'd try to get some advice here since most people in my city look at me strangely when I talk about riding. :)
I'm about 24 weeks pregnant and love riding my bike. That and walking have been my primary forms of exercise lately. However, no one around here seems to know what limitations should be set, if any. Last weekend I rode 30 miles on my Giant Sedona, but normally I'm at about 5-10 miles because I ride in the city and, frankly, I don't feel like getting hit by cars. :( Advice anyone?
I'm pretty sure that your OB would recommend against it, and frankly given the risk of an accident I'd tend to agree...
However, my wife downhill skied through her 5th month without any issues, and taught aerobics through her 8th month (yes, it was a bit comical at the end).
Delta the accident danger, the big issue (as I remember) is going into oxygen debt, which is a bad idea. B

Actually, most doctors would be fine with it if you're not going to be doing anything more strenuous than what you did before you were pregnant and so long as you don't overdo it when you are pregnant. I understand there is a need to keep your heart rate below 160 beats per minute, and you shouldn't ride in really, really hot weather. This (http://www.kidshealth.org/parent/nutrition_fit/fitness/exercising_pregnancy.html) looks like sensible advice to me.
From what I understand, some women do not find road bikes to be very comfortable once they get to be a certain size. This one woman roadie I knew on another forum actually bought an Electra Townie for her last trimester and greatly appreciated the frame geometry. :) There is a local woman here in Portland who was riding her 4 year old on her Bakfiets up until the very end. I understand she went for a ride to try to get her labor started that last week... ;)
