I just saw Michael Rogers retire. I'm not following every kilometer, but it seems he was 40 seconds ahead, when he hit a barrier. His right wrist looked like it was giving him a lot of trouble.
The cameras kept on him, while the announcer kept pleading for them to go back to the front. Sad moment. They're not just talking when they said he could have won it all. :(

Yeah, it was quite sad to see poor Mick Rogers end his tour in such a bad manner. :(
Cheers to him for such a courageous ride!

The report was that Rogers had a seperated shoulder. If that is correct it would appear that he could have 1) manned up and had it popped back in on the road, or 2) limped in, finishing the stage within the time cut, receeived medical attention, and been ok to start after the rest day. Either way his GC aspirations are done, but he's still in the race.
I'll admit to not being a physician, and never having had a seperated shoulder. However, compared to some gutty performaces, ala Tyler Hamilton, it seemed a littlelight to abandon.
I guess it depends on how it was dislocated. When I had my accident, I had the type that pushed it forward out and it popped back in. I continued the ride home but for the next few weeks, it really hurt. I suppose if he dislocated it more seriously, he would never have been able to pull on his bars to climb or sprint.

I have only seen dislocated shoulders in swimming. They were always painfull enough that the people could barley swim. So he may have been able to gut it out. Though it may have been a super bad crash. I didnt see the crash, so I dont know.

Did anyone else read about Patrik Sinkewitz hitting a spectator who is now in a coma? Sinkewitz broke his nose. It wasn't even during the race, it was after the race when he was biking back to his hotel. I don't know how serious a broken nose is but I assume Sinkewitz is not starting Tuesday?

A separated shoulder is a different injury from a dislocated shoulder. Dislocations are popped back in, but a separated shoulder means he tore tissue comprising the AC joint. So there is no popping back in. Even if he gutted it out, the AC joint is not healing after one day of rest. So assuming he really did suffer a separated shoulder, he needs to be in a sling at the very least.
aussies are the toughest goign around.....but some things even they can't bounce back up from. :D
all the best to Mick and Stu for a brilliant autumn once recovered.

Sorry there mate, but with all due respect to O'Grady, his career may be over.
The Australian rider landed on his right side and punctured one lung, broke his collarbone, shoulder blade, five ribs as well as some bones in his spine. It is important to point out though that it is not the spine itself, which is broken.

He'll be back next year.
As for rogers, I wonder why he didn't just grunt to the finish like mcewen and be disqualified but still finish the stage rather than abandon.

He wasn't going to be Dq'd today, it he was loosing time, but it happened late enough it he could make the cut.
But the next stage might not have made the cut. No sense further damaging his injured body delaying his recovery or risking turning a Tour or season ending injury into a career ending injury, especially on such a young rider.

I still remember Stuart soldiering on after breaking a vertebra in stage 4 last year.

We'd need more details on the break.
It might be doable if it's a minor break, but if its severe enough to effect his breathing, I'd think he'd fail to make the cut in a mountain stage.
Any more specifics on how the crashes occurred?
There was speculation that at as the turn Rogers crashed is blind with a decreasing radius he ran out of corner, but no confirmation.
I heard Stuart hit a pole at a turn, nothing more specific.

Nice post genius. I suffered a third degree shoulder separation last autumn in an end-over crash at 25 mph.
My shoulder will never be the same. I had to be lifted out of the bed by my 77 year old father the morning after the crash. After two weeks immobilization in a sling i was able to "man up" and begin 3 months of intensive physical therapy. It was two more weeks before i was able to do much more than raise my injured arm about 45 degrees past perpendicular to the floor, with the use of a pulley operated by my good arm.
I WISH i would have broken my collarbone instead. Maybe then 9 months later i would be able to effectively swing a golf club or baseball bat again. Or maybe spike a volleyball hard.
Perhaps you can invite me to see YOUR next "gutty performance". I could use the inspiration.

Reports are that Rogers tire seperated from the wheel.
Do those hard cornering downhills often pull tubulars off?
If so, do any elect clinchers for stages with treacherous downhills?

zauber: harden the f' up, mate.
Look at Mel Gibson and his separated shoulder in the Lethal Weapon movies... that's how Aussies do it. (OK, he's only a half Aussie, so he's only half-tough)
OK, no more kidding, i agree, shoulder injuries are very painful. i could not imagine cycling with a broken collarbone, let alone torn ligaments and a separated shoulder.
