Did my first race that would be considered a sprint distance. The Anchor Bay Triathlon - 1/2M, 11M, 3M. I registered last minute it was either this or go for a ride so I figured why not, it was local too. My other races have been a couple Olympic distance and a couple that were longer than a sprint but shorter then an oly.
The start was not that well organized. The person get's on a bullhorn and says I'm going to yell go, GO. I mean people were still out practicing it wasn't much warning. No wave start just everyone for themselves! It was windy so my first swim in choppy water and it was full contact. Never really got into any kind of rythym at all. Finished in 17:00 flat, 46th out of 188.
The bike course was pretty flat, except for a freeway overpass that we had to go ever twice. Passed about a dozen or so people and only got passed by about three. Around 33 minutes, 32nd of 188.
I felt pretty good getting off the bike and knew right away that I would have a good run. The run was completely flat, I mean not even a slight incline. I passed about 15 to 20 during the run and only got passed by one guy during the last mile. We ran together for about a quarter mile and then he said let's get that guy up there. It certainly looked like we could. I tried to hang with him but couldn't. The other guy sped up too at the end. He missed him by about a second. Finished the run 21:13, 15th of 188.
My total time was 1:12:50, good for 3rd in my age group. Yeah, my first age group placing. Granted it was a small race. I finished 22nd out of 188 overall. Being that I came from running marathons I always stayed away from sprints because I didn't think they were long/challenging enough, man was I wrong. It was a great time and I wasn't wiped out the rest of the day. I mean it fit right in as a regular workout. Now I'm looking for more to do before my A race in September!
