I've been reading that the Dahon's use some proprietary parts? Is this true of the new(er) ones as well? I'm thinking about a folder, something to live in the trunk of the car and be ridden when I get a chance; and I'm intrigued by the 3 speed Dahons--but I tend to be a bit frugal. All of my current bikes seem to have bad cones.

Yes, most folding bikes have some proprietary parts. Try greasing and correctly adjusting cones from new.

I assume you're looking at the Curve D3? If that's the case, I think the main proprietary part is the handlepost. That component tends to be flimsy -- as in, don't pull back on the handlebars or you are likely to eventually cause a failure. Anyway, if that part breaks 3-4 years from now, it may well be fleabay time for you....

Good to know. I was thinking older Dahon's (sorry, wasn't clear in the post), but that's good to know on the newer ones too. I haven't made up my mind yet, but I like being an informed shopper. I'm hoping one shows up in a garage sale in mint shape for pennies at the moment. :)
