How many hours do you sleep on average?

Now that im taking a rest from excercise in the mornings, i find myself sleeping 8-10 hrs a day. Forget about the weekends, im in the sack at least 12 hrs.

I personally sleep 6- 8 hours a day.

Killer, I'm thinking you're sleeping a lot of hours. The other thread you posted has me a little worried about all the sleep you're doing. I'm just checking in on you- when I went through my depression, I was sleeping 8- 12 hours a day... don't give in to sleeping all the time if you think you may be headed in this direction. Like CB said in the other thread, it just doesn't help you any if you're sleeping a lot and can probably facilitate it if you are sleeping that much.

Be careful, and keep checking in and posting!

I sleep 8-10 hours and generally if I am recovering from weight training or catching up on sleep the upper end otherwise the lower end of the range.Too much as well as too little sleep can be a problem.

Since I don't have a job or anything else to do all summer I've been up there with you killer. Usually sleeping 10-12 hours plus a nap later on. My life is riding my bike, running, eating, and sleeping.

Six, and at times only five, hours per night. Since losing weight and getting more exercise, my sleep cycle has actually shortened. I'm quite happy with it; I don't miss sleeping until noon on weekends and feeling like cr@p for what little remains of the day.

I go to bed around midnite or 1:00 a.m., get up around 6:00 or 6:30 every morning...even on weekends.

Just cannot sleep more.....I have tried!

After spending most of my 20's going to bed between midnight and 2am and getting up at 6.30am, and believing I was doing okay on 5hrs sleep, I started to go to bed between 10.30 and 11.30 and now feel amazing. I was use to getting 5hrs sleep but always had a slight hangover feeling, which I countered with enormous amounts of coffee.
I now get 7hrs minimum usually 8hrs sometimes even 9hrs. However I still get up at 6.30 everyday of the week, just go to bed earlier.

I have also reduced my coffee intake to 1-2cups a day and feel great.

in high school i averaged about 3-4 hours sleep, college about 4.

when i started working it went up to about 6 hours per night and since then has slowly increased a little so i now average about 6 to 7 per night, although individual nights are 4-8 hours.

for me it is very difficult to go to sleep before midnight, although i am working on it as i'd like to start my day earlier so i can leave work earlier and do more in the evening (like ride longer!).

ideally, i would actually like to have a longer day - and stay awake for 30 hours or so, then sleep for 7, but for some reason the earth isn't listneing to my requests right now...

if i sleep more than 8 hours i feel groggy and tired - fortunately it is usually not possible for me to sleep longer than 8 hours.

8.5 hours a day, every day, for the last 13 years. That is one aspect of my life that never seems to change.

I usually sleep between 6-7 hours, I want to sleep 8 hours, but never seem to get to bed early enough.

I seem to do best with 8 or 8.5 a night. But that doesn't happen often enough...

When i say i sleep 8-12 hrs, i dont wake up and force myself back to sleep. I close my eyes and wake up 8-12 hrs later. i dont even wake up in the middle of the night. when i do wake up, its hard as hell to go back to sleep so i just get up.

5 to 6 hours pretty much no matter what. i'd like to sleep more and feel like i could use more but no matter when i go to bed i wake up 5 to 6 hours later. only time i can get more than that is sometimes if i take a nap, but often naps just make it harder for me to get to sleep later.

I'm at about 6-7 hours a night.. have been most of my life.. except in college... maybe 8 hours... but I was always tired then... of course I've had frequent bouts of insomnia since I was about 13 or 14... so sometimes I'd go 2-3 days with only maybe a couple hours of sleep...

in college my roomate couldn't understand oh I could stay away for 24-36 hours without wearing down too much... not really a cafeine guy then either... of course he was on crystal meth most of the time, and I could pretty much match him hour for hour staying awake... go figure

I get 7.5 hr a night, but I am not always tired when I go to bed, just bored (there is nothing ever on tv, and I do NOT bring my work home with me), since my wife has usally been alseep for at less an hour or two before I go to bed, and she sleeps abt thirty minutes longer then me in the morning (9-10.5hr for her) so that limits what I can do in someways

I shoot for a solid 8 hours, but sometimes it works out to be 6-7, which is not enough. On weekends, I sleep until I wake up which turns out to be 10 hours at times.

Lately with this heat and my house at a constant 80 degrees, I've only been getting like 3 hours because it's too freaking hot.

Right after my BSEE and working on my MS I was orking on a missile program at WSMR and got up on a Sunday at ~ 6 went to work (at NMSU) that evening we drove the trailor to WSMR and set it up. continued through moday. Things got real hectic (This was for the original TBMD program called ABM) and we had our test shot Wednesday. Wednesday evening at ~7:30 I fell asleep (for the first time since Sunday) for ~15 hours.

Thanks for the memory

I have always been a yoyo sleeper. In high school I went through bouts of insomnia where at one point I think I didnt sleep for 4 nights and woke up in my sleep constantly when I did sleep. Freshman year in college was the first time I ever slept consistently. I averaged around 3.5 hours of sleep per night. This is now my junior year in college and I am not doing as well with sleep. Somenights I get 3 hours of sleep, sometimes 12, I guess I probably average about 6-7 hours of sleep, but it is still not as good as the consistent 3.5 hours I got freshman year of college.

Friday, 0 sleep
Saturday, 70 mile Club Annual Fundraiser, 2 hours sleep
Sunday, 30 mile ride, overtired 4 hours sleep ( took over-the-counter sleeping pills)
Monday 7 hours sleep
Tuesday 3 hours sleep
I'm tired and just wanna go to bed and sleep. By the time I get home from work this morning, I'll be over-tired and have to leave for RAGBRAI. Maybe I can sleep in the car.

quickest way to kill yourself is to not sleep. It's proven it ages you, it stresses you, creates all kinds of bad mojo so get your 8 hours a day!

Aims for more than 8 hours. Any less, I feel all screwed up. Anyway, what is the recommended sleeping hours for a active individual and a growing one?

If you are still growing you need more sleep than most. Remeber, sleep is the only time you release growth hormone. WIth that said, each person is different. SOme need only 3 hrs, some 14 hrs to go throught the 4 stages of sleep. (Most importantly, the delta sleep or stage four sleep where most of the tissue healing etc occurs.) Interesting, lifespans are prolonged not by the amount of sleep but the amount of naps otherwise all doctors would be dropping dead like flies! I personally go 36 hrs without sleep once to twice a week and then average 4-7 hrs on nights I don't have to go into work. If it takes you 8hrs to feel rested, by all means sleep the eight hours. You will probably need less as you grow older.

Your on the right track it is generally recommended an active growing individual should get at least 8 hours preferably 9 hours sleep. As I weight train I qualify as growing and like you I don't function optimally on less than 8 hours.Remember most of your growth will occur while you sleep .

I can get by on about 6-8 hours/night but I have to be less active and will have to "catch up" at some later point. I function best on about 10 hours/night. I am a very active 41yo/male.

I usually try not to use an alarm clock. I sleep when I am tired and rise when I am not.
