Is it just me or does it seem like Performance has raised prices and limited selections on many components/clothing since they bought out Supergo in Southern Ca.? I don't have anything to verify this but I was just looking at Performance's prices for new bikes and I was comparing it to what I remember the Supergo house bike brand (Scattante) used to sell for -- And the bike brand selection seems pretty limited compared to what Supergo used to carry. Performance owns Nashbar also -- they have the two big internet stores. I still shop at Performance but I think I liked the variety and prices a bit more when both stores were in the market. Competition is good ...
i wouldn't buy a bike there and it seems like their prices on everything else are pretty decent (lights, tubes, some components).

I happen to like Performance for basic parts and clothing but I'd probably never buy a bike from them. Wait until they do their blow out sales (which happen often) and you'll find some really good deals. If you get on their mailing list, they send you special deals (i.e. free shipping for online orders) often.
By the way, Nashbar & Jenson also provide some pretty sweet online deals.

Performance has gone downhill.... they USED to be cool back in the early '90s when they first opened, at least they were new to me, and they sold all kinds of good stuff like Shimano, Campy as well as house brands and other stuff. You had choices. Now it seems like your stuck buying their cheesy house brands or their overpriced limited selection of brand name parts and accessory's
I only shop there if I'm desperate and cant get to a proper shop and thats only *IF* they have what I need, which is rare...
I actually liked Supergo back in the days before the guy that owned it retired and sold it to Performances parent company... not the recent pre-buyout version
I purchased a fair amount of items at Supergo when I started to get into riding,
6 or so years ago.
And shortly after that purchased a full XTR group from performance.
The "scene" at performance has changed since then. I shop there, but they're a big box
shop now.
Don't know why, but I like the small shop feel.

Absolutely correct. Most of the local shops around here (Agoura Cycles and Cycle World to name a few) have competitive pricing, often even lower than Performance. It's still a decent shop, but unless I happen to be near one, there's no reason to shop there.

I only go to Performance for last minute supplies, one day before a big ride ...

I like Performance. The one I like the best is an old SuperGo conversion since it has a wider range of things in stock. That's where I got a pair of PI Ultrasensor bibs for $35 and a microsensor for $75. When they have large sales, their stuff are quite cheap (parts and bars/gels). :p :D

I bought my first bike from Supergo. (Specialized Allez)
I bought my second bike from Performance. (Fuji Team Pro)
I wasn't expecting tailor-made, precise fit service, so I received two bikes at great prices and friendly staff. As for accessories, I'll usually find something online, and have them price match.

I use Perf only for consumables, which is pretty rare. Tonight I placed an order because they had sale prices on the items I wanted, a 10% off web coupon (the stupid coupon code on the back of the catalog didn't work), and free shipping.

Performance is the Walmart of bikes.
That makes no sense.
IMO, Performance can be a good choice for name-brand things on sale, especially when they have their extra bonus points back sales. I'd never buy any of their house brand stuff, though, because I'm just not sure of the quality.
Clif bars, for example, are often on sale at less than $1 each by the box. Cheapest price I've found.
The local Santa Monica store has an extra 10% off sale Tue. 12-2, and ordering catalog items via the "red phone" (in-store catalog ordering) gets you free shipping to the store. Add in price matching, and you can do pretty well at times. The internet retailers have their place, as well, of course.
While the selection (and service) can be better at the local LBS's, items are almost always full price, and they offer little/no discounts. The new REI here, for instance, sells many things at or *above* retail pricing. I realize price is not everything, but for consumables and standard items, it's a good option.

The guy that started SuperGo has opened Surf City Cyclery. Lot of the same bikes but, prices aren't as good. They have some of the same mechanics though.
...but for price matching and the house brand tubes I'd skip it...

Sean was the manager at Supergo for 13 years... or so.....

Performance and their never ending sales. Sometimes I don't think their items ever go back to regular price.
I shop at performance for the little things; they are willing to price match the bigger things too. When their sales rolls around (their good sales), its hard to beat their prices.

I miss supergo! They were a big bike store with a small bike store attitude. Performance doesn't stock or sell alot of different brands. They focus on trying to push their performance branded equipment. Some of their shorts are decent.
I bought my Merlin at supergo after Performance had bought them out. I got such a good deal I felt like I stole it from them.
I had a talk with one of the guys at a converted Supergo to Performance store. Performance is really catering to the entry level to mid level cycling consumer. Basically the Walmart/KMart crowd.
I usually only buy consumables or brand name stuff when it's on sale.

Supergo was way better when it still existed... but Performance is okay when they have a sales and discounts. You have to be very diligent about looking up www.performancebike.com website prices and printing the online prices out so you can walk into the store and get the best price. i like performance when i'm shopping for consumables- tires, tubes, gels, drinks, patches, etc.. and sometimes their helmets, clothing, pedals, cleats, shoes are cheaper than other local bike shops. as far as their bikes go.. skip them and go to a local bike shop for a much better bike from name brands.
