So I ride my fixed gear primarily, and come from a long BMX background. My fixed gear has sparked my interest in longer, faster, and more efficient rides. I've been looking in to road bikes and for a few reasons I have decided against one. So talking to a friend of mine, she let me in on a deal to get this

for like half price...around $750.

So I figure...I won't be getting much "cross" utilization on this bike, but the way I ride I could use the versatility. My question is...if I get rid of the knobbys, possibly get a more road oriented wheelset, and messed with the group a little...do you think I will get 100% out of this bike?

Any other opinions or chime ins are appreciated.

cross bikes are so great. they can obviously be race machines, but can also be road bikes, trail bikes, commuters, winter bikes, etc. they can go everywhere do most things fairly well. i do everything but race mine... yet. i'll even go on true "road rides" with mine; knobbies, 48t chainring and all. it does top out at high speeds much easier than my road bike, but i don't mind.

i think 750 is an amazing steal of a deal for that bike. your fixie will probably start collecting some dust.

why were you thinking about grouppo and wheel changes? what is your definition of "cross" utilization? i'd keep everything as is, but maybe swap tires if this thing isn't going to see much dirt. or leave them, and start looking for dirt.

Why not just change tires instead of wheels? 25 or even 28 slicks are plenty fast on less than perfect roads.

As for changing the gruppo, were you thinking of going up to a bigger ring up front? I'd say ride the thing, and see if you need the bigger gear. $750 for a mostly ultegra bike sounds like a great deal.

I heard the wheels were real heavy, but I don't care too much about grams and all, so keeping them sounds good. As for the gear...gruppo...I figured I would need a bigger gear, but remember - I haven't been on the bike yet so who knows haha. I'm really excited though.

heavier wheels are tougher...id stick with them for a do it all bike. I have a 48 on my cross and its fine - really all you need for 98% of riding.
