Well, about 45 miles of it. It got me home, which was the goal.

Did this last all the way through the ride? Duct tape is a wonderful thing, isn't it? I would hardly call this slacking.

One thing is certain: no one was going to mess with you guys, as it seems massive, pro-wrestler arms were almost a requirement for the men on this ride.

Perhaps I need one of those new pink socal gals jerseys if I'm going to ride with BF again. :p

Thanks Dan for organizing a great ride....I have always wanted to ride down in that area...
Really nice and cool when we started....I was able to hang till we hit the rollers, then got pooped out the back of the peloton....
Had some Red Bull at that rest stop...the caffeine helped, but that stuff did not agree with me...
That was part of the reason we heading back a bit early from the lunch stop...I wasnt feeling great...
We got passed by the Ziptie/Tortise group on the way back...
Got thru San Clemente, then proceeded to get terribly lost....we could not figure how to get on PCH, since it was one-way on the left side and ahead it had freeway signs...so we followed the bike route...big mistake...
we got too far to turn around...and it sort of seemed we were heading in the right direction...even tho we could tell we were on the wrong side of the hills...
But nice quiet roads...went thru San Juan Capistrano, keep going...finally this nice road dead ends...so I asked directions and off we went...up a nasty climb and some nasty rollers up into Laguna Nigel (btw..I wasnt smiling at this point)...finally found Crown Valley to take us back to PCH with a bunch more rollers...and then finally we hit PCH and then the nasty Laguna traffic....
This has to be some of the worst traffic I have ever seen...and I am from NYC..Mark and I managed to scoot our way thru..usually with 1 foot unclipped, ducking mirrors and bumpers...finally we were past that and moving a bit better, but those rollers were taking their toll...finally we found SART and heading back....
Ziptie was there....but suprisingly no one else...we were very suprised since we figured we were so far behind everyone....
We ended up with something I never thought I would say
120miles
4800feet elevation

BTW..Thanks Octico for letting me have some wheel for a while
Thanks Mark for the stars and tour of OC

We (Chucklehead and I) left downtown Oceanside at 5:50 and kept up a good pace through the base. Made a quick stop (<2 minutes) to fill bottles in San Onofre then back on the road. The early AM ride up was wonderful. There was almost no traffic or wind.

Made it to PCH and Jamboree where I thought we should stop. I told CH it was so we could meet up with the Irvine group but really I just needed to rest my lungs for a few. We waited a few minutes, I caught my breath then headed north for about 100 yards and saw the main group. Made a U turn, and rode with everyone to the Starbucks in Dana Point. I started to dog it somewhere north of DP but a group of over 70 riders (70 years old, not 70 of them) in dropped me on a roller so I reached into the reserve bank and picked it up a bit.

Going through the campground in Dana Point, where Herb and everyone else I know has gotten lost at some point, I saw maddmike miss a turn. He reappeared 1/2 mile south so now I know a better route.

Heading south through the base, I started cramping a little and feeling beat. The breeze picking up didn't help matters but finally made it back to Oceanside. Had lunch, rode around town for some junk miles and was home by 2.

Didn't slack as much as I wanted but had a lot of fun. Nice meeting people and seeing others again.

That's a weird area. I don't go through there regularly but I do go several times a year and have had the opportunity to explore new possibilities (got lost). If there's no traffic I go the wrong way for 50 yards or so and cross the tire spikes. If there's traffic, I go on the sidewalk.

Maddmike went a better way - south of the one way street where the k-rail bike path starts, you can go through a campground. I just saw him enter and exit so I'm not really sure what's back there but I'm going to go that way next time.

I want to file a complaint with the ride organizers:

This was supposed to be a Slacker's Century but it was almost 108 miles. I would have thought it would have been something less than 100 miles since slackers don't follow through.
The climbing was supposed to be less than 3000 ft but by all accounts it was more like 4000. This is unacceptable.
The pace was too fast. The ride leader had no control over the hopeless hammerheads who wouldn't know how to slack if their tires were filled with pudding.
The breaks were too short. I was barely able to get through half of the LA Times and the latest copy of Stuff magazine.
The ride took too much time. I missed my "Scrubs" re-runs.
There were no margaritas at the end.
There was no SAG wagon. Everyone had to fix things themselves. How tedious.
The ride leader was never in the lead, and he had an annoying horn.

I am very disappointed at the incompetent planning and mismanagment of this ride. I want my money back.

Thanks everyone for making this such a fun ride. Had a great time out there, although I'm having to work standing up because my backside won't tolerate any more sitting. Great to meet so many cool people. Congrats to Ronjon on the mileage milestone, and the Mr. Serious consumption. Also, congrats to ME for getting the cleavage she's always wanted.:)

Rode back with 1955, tortise45 and sciovid. Thank god they knew the way because I didn't, and I was way too tired to read the route slip in reverse. I found this video a few minutes ago that pretty much sums up what it felt like following Ralph through the traffic in Laguna. ;) Thanks for the adrenaline rush.

Hey Ladies & Gentlemen,
It was very nice meeting you guys. I have trouble matching names to faces and when I have to match names to faces to logins it becomes even harder :o . So I won't mention anybody by name.
I rode only about 20-25 miles with you but it was fun, even more so because I missed the ugly part of the route through Laguna Beach. Thanks for putting up this ride Indolent! BTW, if you want an idea for a detour around Laguna - coming from the North on PCH turn left on Laguna Cnyn (CA-133), right on El Toro, right on Aliso Creek, right on Moulton, right on Crown Valley and you'll be back on PCH. There are a couple of pesky hills to climb (as Indolent would put it) but no hill is worse than riding through Laguna.

For the four of you I actually rode with I had a good time. My food/hydration kinda fell apart from lunch onward so I really dragged the last 35 miles or so. Thankfully several kinda souls took an active interest in my well-being so I made it thru my first unsupported century.

- chicken Mcnuggets doesn't qualify as a power lunch...or food for that matter.
- Vitamin water can hardly be called water but I think it does have crack in it.
- pedaling with cleat covers is not really a good idea.
- remind me to avoid any rides with the term slacker in them.
- whole lotta Caucasians in the OC :)....not that there's anything wrong with that.
- I'll probably do that ride in the future...without you slackers.

Coming out of lurkedom (sp?) to say thank you to Dan for a great ride! :D The best part for me was seeing everyone. It has been a long time (too long!) since we have done a BF ride. As always, everyone was so wonderful. We are like a big family...looking out for each other! Thank you to EVERYONE for taking such good care of Matt with all of his 'mechanical' issues. Truly, Chimivee is the hero...had he not had the zip-ties and the duct tape...not too sure what we would have done!:( That was just amazing...for him to have a small HomeDepot in his saddle bag. We were telling him and Voltman last night...we are re-thinking what we carry in our saddle bags.

Thanks to CJ, Voltman and Chimivee for being patient through Matt's two initial flats before we even hit the first rest stop! Thanks to Jschen for pulling us through Pendelton after the saddle event. Thanks to Extort for finding (what we think) was the reason for Matt's 3 flats and for he and Chucklehead assisting with the third flat of the day! :( I too think it is time for a Matt to get a new bike....we are hitting the bike shop tonight! :D

As for slacking...did not look to me that there was much of that on the road...maybe at the rest stops- but that was it! ;)

Again, it was great to see everyone, catch up with many of you and meeting some of you for the first time. I hope to see you all very soon. Have a great week.

P.S. Mo....I save my whips for only 'special occasions.' Yesterday...unfortunately was not one of them. Maybe the next ride....:p

:( I'm sorry Steve. I hope you didn't feel left behind, honestly. I didn't realize it was your first century! By the way, I told Alfa63 (also his first century) that the way we rode that is NOT how most people ride centuries. Most people either ride really fast and take quick breaks or ride moderately and take longer - but not as long as we did! - breaks. I hope you'll come out and ride with us again. And yes, lots of vanilla folks in the OC. What is up with that? Not as much flavor in the beach communities. :D

Wow, I was kidding about the new bike, but...Okay!

I suggest either the new Trek Madone, or a Cervelo Soloist, or a Moots, or Litespeed, or Scott, Look, Time, BMC, Giant, Specialized Tarmac, Blue, Basso, Pedalforce, Mercier, Cannondale, or Fuji.

Now that I've had some sleep... it was an amazing ride.

It was my first century in a long time, and it was definitely faster than advertised. But, on the flip side, I was pretty amazed at how a bunch of "slackers" could egg me on to speeds I didn't know I could hit. That was a good feeling. I also was amazed at how I could take breaks at time spans I didn't know existed. I was in awe of the McGyver-level improvisation with the seat, and more in awe as to how-the-heck Matt could ride those last 40 miles pretty much out of his seat. I also discovered I had a hidden bike messenger gene somewhere around downtown Laguna. I jumped a few curbs and actually hit a mirror with my shoulder and just kept going...

All in all... great day, great people. It was nice meeting everyone, and putting faces to names and all that. Everyone was wonderful and I'll ride with any of you anytime... and if you want to ride with me, hunt me down in/around Griffith Park.

my first unsupported one. I've done four others but never without fully stocked SAG stops. It'll probably be a while before I do another BF ride. I can't keep up with anyone so I end up riding alone. I can stay home, sleep in and do that without using any gas. :)
