View Full Version : The REAL Flagstaff
Let me first apologize, I can only claim ignorance. I had NO idea that there was more to Flagstaff then just getting to the top of the ampletheater. As it turns out, if you do not make the right into park you will continue for serveral more miles with HUGE elevation gain. Some of the most intense "UP" that the mountain has to offer. So with that being said, sadly I must adjust the current score and admit my defeat.:(

That will be my next toy.....someday.
You should come along with me on the Golden Canyon \ Coal Creek Canyon loop. Last Saturday my second attempt was a success. It is 53 miles with 6250 feet of climbing. Being prepared made the difference for me.
I would post my routeslip route but it freaking wiped it out.
Are you heading out on the 60 mile bicycle village ride? The flat part has me a bit thrown off. I love climbing! Though the descent is much more fun.
I will be testing this weekend. One step close to second degree. w00t!

In that case I am not going to be at the BV ride. 60 miles of flat terrain is .......(where is a snoring smilie?)
Maybe I will visit flagstaff and see what all the fuss is about. :D

That route is called 'Super Flagstaff' for a reason! There are sections of almost 20% grade...they are short, but man are they vicious.

No kidding! I made it to the amplitheatre and thought I had it made, but the real killer is the stretch above that. I eventually made it but had to stop and pant a few times - does this count as a tie?
Weird thing is, when it was over my arms were more sore than my legs:eek:. I guess I need to work on my technique or get some lower gearing. And what a hoot coming down!

Well if you are going to do the real summit then you might as well keep going to Walker Ranch and do a loop. That's called 'Super Walker' and yes, I have seen people doing it (on full-on mountain bikes!).

I did a loop around the parking lot at the Walker Ranch trailhead, then went back. I was looking for water but nothing doing. There is water at the amplitheatre, though, so I got some there instead.
Does a 'Super Walker' return though the parking area or do you jump onto the road over by the railroad tracks?

Meow. superflagstaff 1, me 0. I had to stop and breath on that 20% part. wow was that evil.
What is the technical definition of superflag? do you drop in to gross reservoir? I turned around when it started to descend steeply... didn't know if i would be able to make it back up.

I think people usually refer to, Gregory Canyon to the Amphitheater road junction as "Flagstaff" (2.9 miles at 6.5% avg) and if you continue up the road to the top of the climb "Super Flagstaff" (4.6 miles at 8.0% avg).
I think she is asking what is the "official" top of super flagstaff. I turned around at the top of the very first descent I came to, where I was looking into the next valley. Don't know if that helps at all.

You went to the "official" top then. I think there's a "Leaving Boulder Parks" sign there too, and a big cluster of mailboxes.

cool, i made it to the top! sortof..... i stopped to almost topple over but not quite and then struggle to get started about 100 yards from the top.

Yeah, I consider the full Flagstaff to go to the Leaving Mountain Parks sign...but if you go up and over past Walker you eventually get to a great view of a huge reservoir over there. I read the really steep section of Flagstaff (just before the Lost Gulch Overlook) is 14%, pretty nuts! If you're into climbing and wanting something a more than Flagstaff, Four Mile Canyon->Poorman->Sunshine Canyon->Gold Hill is a really good climb. About 15 miles of (almost) pure climbing, then 15 miles descending back! Not to mention the steepest grade I've seen is right off of Gold Hill; Lick Skillet Rd. at 15% for a mile (dirt)!!!
