General Cycling Discussion - Would someone explain this to me, please

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Dr. D, how much would you charge for that paint job?

$22k+ and is it just me or are the handlebars a little high for a "race bike"?

Damn nice bike! Would not even consider commuting on it though.

{note to mods, I intended to post this in General,
although I don't think it really matters**

Gee, there is like 12.5K in frame and wheels alone.

Bet you don't use that as a daily commuter.

It's a beautiful piece of machinery and art.

However, that bike will never be commuted on, or raced on, or really ridden very much. Some rich older dude will don his assos bibs, and ride it gingerly less than one mile each way from his McMansion to the coffee shop in a very toney suburb. At which point he'll sit and loudly swap bike war stories from his last charity ride with his other pals who also cruised over from 3 blocks away on their $12K bikes, and in their assos kits.

Also, none will be wearing helmets, and they won't tip the barista.

I've seen it. It's happens in Wayzata Minnesota every weekend.

^^Little judgmental there?

Anywho, there is room to spend more. There is also a diminishing return on road bikes past about $2k. Dude has the coin and likes nice bikes then he's free to support the bike industry. Lord knows I can't keep up with that kind of budget. As to saddle height, perhaps it hasn't adjusted for the rider.

For 22k, I would want streamers coming out of the bar ends. Made of unicorn hair.

Someone needs to invent lightweight water for that bike. $500/l.

Dude (http://www.hiosilver.com/). A little re-branding, a little marketing, a killing could be made.

I'm sorry, but that kind of money spent on a bike, or $100,000+ on a car, or $1mill on house all bring the word "profane" to my mind. I don't care how cool it is, it's ridiculous.

or $1million house all bring the word "profane" to my mind.
You aren't from around HERE, are ya? ;)

What sells for a million bucks around here is a SHACK!
Granted it's a quaint little 1/1 fix-er-upper, in the far corner of Carmel, but still a "shack" in my book!:p

One of twelve new "houses" being built on Monterey beach can be had for ONLY...

4.75 million dollars.

Or heck, Allen Fundt sold his property at Bixby Bridge for $35 million a few years back.

In fact, realtors around here speak differently . . .

Oh, that house is One Two. Or in the example above; four seven five.

Our house is seven fifty. Which is LESS! it's only $750,000!
Granted our mortgage is on 1/3 of that. Bought it in '91! :D
If it were seven five, THAT would be million$!

If I didn't grow up here, I wouldn't be able to afford to live here!

And come August, the place is thick with million dollar CARS! (The Pebble Beach Concourse d'Elegance)
While driving a taxi a couple of years ago I asked the fair what their favorite marquee was. Ferrari was the answer. And as we came to a stop at Ocean & Carpenter, ther were SIX other cars at the intersection.

ALL FERRARI'S!! Bet you've NEVER that happen in YOUR town! ;)

Anyway, I'm derailing here. (I'm also a train collector)
I'll check the link and get you a quote for the paintjob! :D

$ $ $!

Dr. D, how much would you charge for that paint job?
Weeeell, if I didn't have the article quote, I'd probably say around $600. But then I can be a "cheapo" sometimes. $800 isn't out of line, but it's not really THAT tricky of a paintjob.

THIS paintjob is $4,000 though! :D

(sorry, I tried to get the picture to show up without clicking on it, but no go)

Each little piece of tape was cut using a small pair of Swiss Army knife scissors.
Took about 4 1/2 months to get the whole frame/fork & stem done. It took 3 days to remove the tape!
Of course, that one was from a few years ago, so maybe it should be $6,000 now?
I'll have to send my card to that shop in Mill Valley. ;)

Amazing. :) Methinks $4000 is a bargain for a paint job like that.

OOOOOOH! AAAAAAAH!

Now THERE'S a bike I could ride out to the Concourse d'Elegance and actually GET NOTICED!

(Spyker is a Dutch company that makes exotic CARS, including the soon to be released D-12 Peking-to-Paris, a 500 hp W12 powered SSUV. That's Super Sports Utility Vehicle)

And the wheels on the bike have the same look as the wheels on the CAR!

I wonder if the bike can do 0-60 in 6 seconds too? :p

It sure would teach a driver and their insurance company a lesson if you get hit on one of these.

Dr. D. Love your paint job, you make the American Chopper painters look like a bunch of hacks!!

Deltron, you are THE MAN. Holy wow.
Thank you so much! :D

I only got a B on it for a graphic design class.
The musical notes actually LOOK like something identifiable!
The instructor marked you down if the design wasn't pure "graphics", ie; no identifiable elements beyond lines, circles, triangles & squares/rectangles.

Actually the seattube is a kind of "Totem Pole".
Starting at the bottom it's;
The road leading to the grassy field where the music is playing and the sun is shining and the bees are buzzing.

Hey, no pics of the fancy bike from the OP article?
From ME? NOT yet! I still can't get pics to load the way others do.
(as you can tell from the fact that someone ELSE posted my picture all big and bold and chit!)
To see the pics of the paintjob in question, you have to click the link to the article, then click the "What goes into making a $22K bike" link. Then click to picture #3. Smoked Coffee paint; $800.

Again, I don't know how to get it from there to this thread! :p

THANKS b2m!!!

But due to the fact that bicycles & motorcycles are TOTALLY different canvas's, I think Nubs does a pretty dang nice job. He's alot better with freehand airbrushing than I am. His "Dragon" paint for the Aragon bike was awesome!
Too bad there's nowhere on most bicycle frames to do such art!
And do it any justice, that is.
