As many know, last summer I went on (and overdosed on) potent medications with horrible side effects for Trigeminal Neuralgia, which was followed by brain surgery in November, which was followed by several kidney stones happily winding their way through my ureter, followed by a Lithotripsy.
Anyway, in the process I managed to gain 30 pounds, and get way out of shape and have been attempting to get back in shape ever since.
So, today, I got out the trusty Lemond Buenos Aires, and I rode 3,168,000 inches (8,046,720 cm) - commonly known as 50 miles or about 80.46 km.
So, what is the deal - practically everyone on this forum rides that much regularly.
Well, for me it was a milestone - 20 more miles than I have ridden yet this year on one trip.
Since the temperature was near 100F, I even took some water along, and, also conceded to stop at a gas station and buy and drank some Gatorade (ugh). I usually go 20-30 miles without water or food. Then I had one energy bar and stopped for a Subway 6" turkey on whole wheat on the way back.
So, all went fine. It was not a fast ride, but I made it with no problems. Stopped several times last 12 miles but was doing okay. Probably could have gone to a full metric century, but as temp was now 105F decided to stop while I was ahead.
So, Koffee Brown - if you are ready for a hunky, virile, 63 year old weight lifter, I am packing my bags to Chicago right now. :D (Or any other of the horny ladies in the Women's Forum). No, I don't pose in the nude - sorry.
And, Underwear Nazi - the Jockey briefs worked just fine under the bike shorts, I have NO SORENESS, no chafing, no red spots, no stupid udder budder on my bottom, either.
I now feel like a respectable cyclist, doing 50 miles again.
You all have a great day.
On to a metric century.

Much congratulations Denver! I have yet to ride 50 miles. I am proud of ya Son! BTW, you don't think Koffee would cheat on her secret admirer (me) do you? I hear that sound in my head already, you know, the airplane in a death spiral. :) Best - Ted
Good on yer! Congratulations on such a tough recovery. Each goal achieved is a great thing.
Shaking head…I don’t know about the underwear thing however.
Denver,
Glad to see you are "Back"

It is sort of a standing (well, sitting) joke around here. UN and I see things just a bit differently, so to speak.

Congrats! A century isn't too far away!

Congratulations Denver! What a fighter! It's horrible to have medical problems and setbacks and the Road to Recovery is sometimes so disappointing. A victory like today is a cause for celebration. Take care and beware of all the "young-unattached females" you don't want to bring on heart problems now, do you?
Denver, glad to see you've recovered and are getting back into trimming the excess baggage. Keep it up, kid.
BTW, I hope your wife doesn't hear about your philandering.

No, I don't want to have any young females heart broken because of me. Good thought. I'll treat them kindly.

Congrats Denver. Sorry I didn't hear about your health problems earlier. I would have added you to my prayer list. (Added now to my "recovery" list).
My wife's been sick for almost 3 years now, and I never "fully" understood the saying, "Without your health, you have nothing", until now!
Prayer's for continued recovery and a toast, to DnvrFox, "Many Miles More!"

Missed your tale of woe last summer, but good to hear of your recovery and resumption of serious miles. I know from my own experience how important a milestone like this can be; you relaize you've been thinking of yourself as a "sick person," and now suddenly you don't.
Now, you don't suppose there could be a connection between those stones and your apparent reluctance to hydrate when riding, do you?

I hate to burst your bubble, but the kidney stones were in the winter, when I wasn't riding. Also,
The connection is directly between the strong meds I was on last year and the kidney stones. I haven't had any for 30 years, then, shortly after going on the meds, they started popping out.
And I do hydrate a lot - I just don't always do it when I am riding.

Going that long without water is a very bad thing you are supposed to consume 1 bottle per hour.

Could we stop the moralizing, please? Good Lord, I was trying to share some good news, and someone takes it upon themselves to pick it apart and set rules for the world.
I have been riding five years now, and one thing I have found is that there is no rule nor practice that fits everyone. And anyone who tries to apply a rule to someone else - or everyone else - is stepping way beyond their (and my) bounds.
And who says one bottle per hour?
There are a nuumber of folks on this forum who regularly ride 20-30 miles without extra hydration. Each of our bodies is different.
So, find what works for you, but don't tell me I have to do it also.
Thanks.

To the contrary Denver, I drank too much last Wednesday on an outing, and had to sit for about 45 minutes waiting to absorb the water, and let my stomach settle. I thought I would lose it once or twice. The problem was that I drank too much because I got very hot and sweaty. A terrible feeling to be sitting on a bench, bloated, and on a bike that is killing me. I finally recovered and made it back home.

Agreed. I was just asking.
My wife has had trouble with stones and keeping hydrated is one of the measures she uses to prevent reocurrance.
Now, you don't suppose there could be a connection between kidney stones and underwear... nah, impossible! :p

Yes, it is most definitely one of the recommended therapies.

20-30 miles without water! You are an iron man! I have to guzzle water constantly on summer rides around here.
Congratulations on the long ride. This must mean you are feeling healthy, happy, and wise. :)

Well, I wouldn't go 20-30 miles at 95F w/out water. At 70, I do fine.

You don't think the extra grams of the underwear is slowing you down though? ;)
How truely wonderful that you are back in the saddle!! Keep up the fine work, and have a little fun along the way....it just gets better!
