July 22, 2007 ride
Roll at 8 AM from Bonita Creek Park, Newport Beach
(La Vida and University, near Jamboree, map (http://static.flickr.com/59/199725487_bfef05c022_o.gif))

~60 miles, moderate climbing, same route as TdSS stage 1 (official routeslip attached)
(bikely.com route (http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Santiago-Cyn-Back-Bay-Loop), TdSS planning (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=213322), ride reports (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=215201))

July 22, 2005: A couch potato went for a ride on his new toy, a 2004 Specialized Roubaix Comp that he bought on a whim. Taking his first baby step toward the goal of someday riding 100 miles per month and 30 miles in one day, he rode up the driveway of his apartment complex, falling on his side as he negotiated a speed bump. Unphased, he continued on his way, riding 5 miles in 30 minutes (ride time). His legs hurt for the rest of the day, but he was hooked.

July 22, 2006: Irvine--Oceanside, with lots of variants. dog hair and I decided to ride Oceanside--Irvine--Oceanside, joining the large group that was gathered at the Irvine Amtrak station. Fun 90 mile round trip, meeting many BikeForums members for the first time and saying hi to several others whom I hadn't seen for a while. Promised Pico that I would get road shoes, road pedals, and bottle cages and bottles to replace my MTB shoes/pedals and hydration pack. mateo44 told me I should go ahead and get the dream bike I described to him as we approached Camp Pendleton. Well, since bottle cages and bottles cost money and since mateo44 told me I deserved the bike, I went ahead and bought Vivian the next day, and Nytro was kind enough to throw in free bottle cages and bottles.

July 22, 2007: ??? It was so much more fun riding in a group in 2006 than it was going at it solo in 2005. Let's find some ride for this Sunday. Any suggestions?

Great thread. I can't believe Solana Beach has been a year already.

I'm probably going to be working at Del Mar on Sunday morning. If you guys decide to ride locally, perhaps I can bring Sacha along and meet up with you guys at some point.

What hours do you think you'll be working?

I won't know my weekend schedule until tomorrow or Thursday. There's a significant stake race on Sunday afternoon, but if "my" horses don't go, I may be able to get everything done on the backstretch before training hours end (10am). Then again, my clients may reschedule for Friday or Saturday, so I'm at their whim.

But don't plan anything around me. I'll try to show up if I can! :)

How about the Tour de Sugar Shorts ride that Brandy and Tiff led last year on July 30? That was a ride that for the most part people seemed to enjoy. It's located in a relatively convenient location for much of the SoCal forumites, it stays relatively close to the coast so it shouldn't get too crazy hot, and it has nice varied terrain while being accessible to a large cross section of the forum. We'd have to dig up a route slip though... maybe Brandy or Tiff could provide one if no one has one still around.

I think that's the last ride I ever did on my Roubaix. I picked up Vivian the following Wednesday.

I think it's still floating around. Of course, if the group's small enough, we can just go by memory.

That was the ride we did a week later, on July 30th, right? Santiago Canyon and optional Back Bay loop, right?

EDIT: Yep, I have the route slip.

I'd consider it. How many miles?

~50-65 miles, depending on the routing option you pick. Some moderate hills, but nothing to worry about.

Great! If we can drag Voltaire along, we can recreate our 20+ MPH paceline on the flat-ish section after the Starbucks break. :D

So... before we go starting a more official looking ride thread...

What time do you guys want to roll? I understand Santiago Canyon can get a bit hot midday, which argues for an early start. On the other hand, it can't be that bad, can it? There's a rest stop just before Santiago Canyon and one just after. We could sleep in if we don't mind the heat.

DaveSANYYZ
07-17-07, 08:09 PM
This sounds fun! :D

I'll be driving up from SD the morning of the ride, but will be ok with driving up 4:30am at the earliest. That means I prefer a roll time of 5:30am+ in OC or 6:30am+ in LA. That's just the earliest time I can make it. Not sure if that's enough to avoid the heat.

We're not in the canyon for very long, but it can get toasty. I'd be up for a medium-early start, say meet at 7:30 roll at 8:00am?

But whatever the group decides is fine with me.

I wish I could go, but I have Sarah again this weekend. Now if the ride were to be on the weekend of the 28th...I'd be in.

I'm just saying.

Let see, some heat in the Summer no less, or NO sleep the night before...I don't like the heat, but I LOVE my sleep!:D Of course, I can't go anyway, so who cares what I think.
