I just got this Edge 305 in today from GeoMan.com (awesome with the shipping, btw!) and I've just been fiddling around with it a bit before I use it tomorrow.
Anyway, I have a route I'd really like to create before I go out tomorrow on my ride so that I can have everything set up already to analyze the stats after my ride. Is there a way to plot it out on a map and then sync the Edge with the route for my ride tomorrow?
I have both the Garmin Training Center software and Ascent so I can use either application at your discretion for this specific task.
Thanks

I think it can be done either on the edge or TC (don't know about Ascent), but I never tried to do it. It might be easier to ride the route, then save it as a course. As you ride, you can hit the lap button whereever you want. I think you can add course markers later. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input. I am going to give that a try in an hour or two and see how it works out.

Does anyone else have any suggestions?

I am pretty sure you can automatically do the export with www.mapmyride.com (http://www.mapmyride.com). Create your route in there, then export as a GPX file. You then should be able to import the file using the Garmin software to the GPS. I am at work which does not allow Java/javascript otherwise I'd go on the site and figure out hwo to do it.
The only part I am not sure about is the ability of the Edge 305 to import the data from a GPX file, since I do not own one. It should do it.
My Edge 305 says it will only import .crx files, but none of the route sites seem to download in that format. Any ideas about how to get around that?

Do you have MapSource? It's a Garmin product and I'd bet it can do it. If not, you can use gmap-pedometer.com (I think that's the right address) and save the route as a "gpx" file and then you can find free/shareware software that will convert a gpx to crx file. I think they might even have info on where to get that.

Ok, correction to what I posted. Under Mapmyride it has an "export to Garmin" function that creates a .crs file. I had some trouble with it yesterday finding the downloaded .crs files and it was because of a Windows XP Administrator/User conflict. Once that was resolved, however, it seem to upload them to the Edge 305 just fine.

im resurrecting this thread from the dead, hopefully someone will be able to answer my question.
if you make a map on mapmyride.com and then export it to the garmin, will it give you turn by turn instructions? thanks

I haven't yet learned how to do it. The 305 provides a route you can follow, and when you have it on 1/8 - 1 mile zoom, you can tell very easily what turns to take. I have done hundreds of miles on dozens of routes exclusively following the Garmin, and yet it doesn't provide turn by turn directions.
I don't show the 305 as having a basemap nor supporting any kind of turn-by-turn navigation. Looks like a basic fitness computer that also has a GPS to me? Looks like you're at the 605 before any real functionality starts

Not sure about the 305 but if it is the same as the 705 (with respect to MapMyRide) it is very simple. Just create your route and save it in MMR, then plug in your Garmin, wait for it to be recognized, and then from MMR save the route again, but this time as a GPX file and save it to the GPX folder in the Garmin, if the 305 has that. The 705 will then give you turn-by-turn directions, but if you deviate from the route even very slightly (to swing by a mini-market, etc.) it will re-calculate and route you to destination by the shortest route rather than back to your planned route. I alerted Garmin and they say they are aware of it and plan a fix in a future release of the software.
I have tried the reverse as well, i.e., uploading a ride from the GPS to MMR. That function is apparently in Beta test mode and I couldn't get it to work.
yet it doesn't provide turn by turn directions.

If you create a course and then "do course" the 305 will give you warnings about upcoming turns (including direction) and other points. While it won't give you turn-by-turn directions to get back on course if you wander, I haven't missed a turn yet.

Can you be more specific how you create the course for this to work, and what screens it tells you which way to turn?
I have been creating my courses on mapmyride.com, exporting them as CRS files and then importing them into the 305 with Training Center. I don't get any directions even when I "do course". What mapping software are you using?

I am by no means an expert, but bikeroutetoaster.com works well for me. I download the course in .tcx format to a courses folder on my PC and then import it into Training Center. So far, it has worked for me.
I get turn warnings at 50 feet before the turn, and I think you can adjust that in bikeroutetoaster.
Good luck.

I usually just map the route in one of the on-line tools, open it in training center and use training center to add course points (Left, right, straight, etc).
I use the standard screen on the Garmin after I select "Do course":
Time
Speed --- Distance
Dist to Crs --- Time to Crs
Dist to End --- Goal Time
A warning should also pop up when you hit the course point.
