General Cycling Discussion - What makes a bike rodeo successful?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

A group of us are trying to put on a bike rodeo this year. We're not sure if there's enough time to do this, and we're not sure what would make one successful. The police would be there registering bicycles, we'd give away some helmets and I'd like to get a mechanic from a LBS to look at peoples bicycles and tell them if they need work or not. We'd pass out some copies of a bicycle/pedestrian route I planned that shows the history of parts of the area and hopefully inspires people to exercise more too if I could ever finish writing it. What else could we offer that would make this attractive to people besides free beer?

Hookers are usually a good draw, that and free cocaine.

Seriously, gymkhanas are fun. Cone weave race, slow race, ping-pong ball grab, etc are a blast. Not to mention humbling for the punk kid that thinks he's hot stuff. :D

That's a great idea (the last ones, not the first two!) We're planning on doing this in the parking lot of the park that has a BMX park, maybe we can tie that in.

It's going to be done in conjunction with the city and the park district, I'll ask them about insurance etc... Can't have too much fun without any of that, can you?

"I'll ask them about insurance"
See if you can get a copy of their policy. Talk to people that do events in that park. It might be worth purchasing an hour of legal time to make sure you will not be liable for anything. Be careful about assuming liabilities.
