Bicycle Mechanics - Tuning your own bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have been trying my hand at bicycle maintenance and tuning, mostly on my older mtb. My learning process has mostly been composed of bits and pieces of info from the internet and trial and error. This has go OK, but I would like to increase the learning curve. Does anyone know any good books or manuals for a do-it-yourselfer? One of the main reasons I am doing this is because the closest LBS is 40 miles and he stays backed up. This would put me out of riding a few days, which I hate to do.

I'm in the same boat as decided to try to do most of my own maintenance starting this year.
There are some great web sites out there on road bike repair/maintenance, but I'd also highly recommend taking a look at a reference book like Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance. Sometimes there is really no substitute for having a good book in front of you when you're actually doing the work.
