I finally found an area here in Alabama, that I felt somewhat safe on the road with traffic. It was in Huntsville, Al, and there were a lot of challenging courses. Since I live in Mobile (fairly flat), I was not use to riding all of the hills, and climbing mountains. I brought my road bike & mountain bike, but the road bike never was removed from the car. Again I needed the extra gears, to get up the steep hills.

As you know, Huntsville is home to NASA, so you have a lot, and I mean a lot of engineers. So there is large population of professional folks, who seem to be into cycling/running. It was nice to be able to share the road. The bicycle shops were also very courteous as well. I have to check out the shops when I go out of town. I even had the chance to try out a Trek 5200, very niiiice! Anyway I just wanted to share this with everyone.

Oh yeh, if you like really good mexican food, they had a resturant on par with some of the places you would find in Texas, not your everyday tex mex, Peptido's. Also found fellow cyclists there, since I brought my bike into the lobby. Everyone was very accomodating, and I look forward to the next trip. Than, maybe I will be able to climb Mt Sano with my road bike. ;)

Have you seen the website for the local club? Spring City Cycle Club is large and very active. They have year around road riding and schedule 60-80mi rides in the winter. Morgan Andriulli (sp) does a nice 40-45mi every Sunday
am starting from Mullins Restaurant. You can do flats, hills and rollers. They have an upcoming century on 9/14/03. Steve

Yes I did check out the site, and they are very active. I see that you are from Bimingham, so I know, you are more accustomed to hills than we are way down here in LA. lol

I imagine there is also great places to cycle in Birmingham as well. I stopped near Oak Mountain at Cahabba's Bike shop to pick up a camel bak rocket for my trip up to Huntsville. It came in very handy, along with the liquid, I was able to pack up maps, check books, glasses, and etc.
