damn, now im all confused. I was all set to upgrade my crankset to a Deore LX and everything else to XT (pricewise best for me). So Im doing some reading around and see that Raceface seems to be balls above the Shim setup, but would probably comare pricewise to the XT crankset. Great, so I start looking into that and some people are saying that the RF BB sucks balls.
Im sure this has been discussed too many times to count, but I cant seem to find any good compares because theres too much crap to sort through.

So, is the original LX/XT setup a decent choice for your more advanced XC riding? Ive seen that the chain rings are prone to quick wear and bending. Or should I jump to the RF and maybe find a different BB to go with it? Or even better, is it a push and just go with whatever floats my boat?

The great thing about RF (or any ISIS or taper compatible crank) is that you can pick from best-of-breed. I have RF Turbines mated to Taperlock BB and they're still holding strong. So strong that they've not given me a reason to switch over to ISIS despite my lust to do so. I think the critics are slamming just the RF ISIS-splined BBs. You may want to consider RF cranks and another brand of BB if the reviews worry you. Take a look at FSA.

Actually, at the beginning of this year raceface had a huge issue with bearing problems. It wasn't a recall worthy problem but lots of people noticed a difference in quality. I don't know if they have been fixed yet. You may want to take a look at FSA for an equal quality bb. :)

Truvativ makes ISIS cranks and BB's. I have their Firex SL cranks on my bike with matching BB and couldn't be happier. They shift smooth and seem to be holding up well, and both are about the same price as XT stuff. Truvativ BB's require a special tool to install, though.

I've had the same cheap Shimano bottom bracket for literally 5 years or more. It still runs pretty smooth, too.

I might add that I run a Race Face Next LP crank, however.. quality is top notch.. shifts great, light weight, and very strong.. everything I want.
