This is the time of year where, generally, the riding weather's as bad as it gets in the desert.

I'm not a wimp about this stuff, I'll get up early, ride in the heat, go up north to ride, all that stuff, but frankly speaking it don't get much worse than 110 and 50% humidity. At 9pm it's still over 100 degrees. The only relief is when a storm blows in, then there's giant dust-clouds, lightning and other bad-weather danger.

So historically, I'd call this the off-season. Sure I'd get in some early-morning rides, but wouldn't work too hard at it. Come late September, when the weather breaks, it's time to gear up for El Tour de Tucson!

I screwed up my plan this year, I'm booked for Hotter 'n' Hell 100 in late August. So I'm kicking myself in the arse!

What do the rest of you desert riders do? Are you trying to keep up with those Northerners who were snowed in for 3 months?

I just take lots of water and try and get through the heat. (FYI: Trying to ignore the heat doesn't seem to work) Though its not as bad up here in Kingman since we don't have to deal with the humidity.

In May I too off for Europe for some months, next week to England but think I prefer desert to inundated area.
Extra swim courses now.

Summer in Tucson?
Commuted to work in Tucson 5 days a week, year round for 17 years. 'Warmest' commute was at 117 degrees but many afternoons well over 100.
Daily rides were done on our tandem before I went of to work on single.
Sundays and days off we'd get in a 50-miler starting off at daybreak. Done before 10 a.m., hit the pool, take a nap . . .
Now that we are retired, we spend 3 summer months someplace 'up north' . . . currently in Idaho. Cooler? Yup!
