The little revenge thingies that make us happy! Today was my turn. I rode up the top section of Euclid Ave 3 times for a gentle climbing workout. On the last trip down is when the moron driver shows up. Some old dude in a nice *** Mercedez sports car. I'm approaching one of the stop signals on the busy avenue, divided hwy type for those that don't Know Euclid. I'm in the bikelane with cars stopped ahead at the light, maybe 3 or 4 in each of the two lanes. Right before I get to the light, this guy comes flying up in the Benz. Didn't really cut me off, but turns in front of me. I'm thinking he's going to turn right so I figure impatient driver.
The light is still red but this guy isn't turning right. He's blocking the bike lane stopped along side the other two vehicles. I know what this fool is about to do. He's one of those guys that thinks he should be able to do whatever he wants cause he's in a Benz! He's about to zoom around everybody on the right when it turns green. So I squeeze right between him and the other car stopped in his proper lane. I pull right in front of the Benz and reclaim my bikelane!
This fool aint going nowhere! I'm like twice as big as his Benz so if he hits me, he's getting a major dent on his hood, and I'm getting a sweet bike if I live!:D....So the light turns green and I take my time clipping into my pedals and darn, I just couldn't seem to get going!:p
I slowed the guy down so much that he ended up behind everybody anyways! Well, I don't get a new bike but I got the satisfaction of turning the table on one of the bully drivers!:o

Good Job Beanz!
Euclid ave - hmmm - too many rich people - but the trees and shaded lanes are sure nice :)
I love pissing off cars who do that - but be careful - getting hit by a car is no fun!

Fred:
Really be careful, okay? See my post in "Most bike-unfriendly towns in SoCal" (#53). Rich old people in red cars can be really irrational, really stubborn, and really terrifying. Since they can KILL you, and you probably can't afford to fix a dent in their fender, if they want to drive like they own the road, it might be the better part of wisdom to let them have it.
If some old lady is going to play nine pins on the road with a peloton of bicycles, it's probably better NOT to be in that peloton.
Judges in So Cal for some reason get a little squeamish about throwing 85-year-old ladies, who weigh less than a CF bicycle wringing wet, in the pookie.

Thanxz VP. Actually I knew we had about a minute before the light changed, There was no way he could not see me, or any of the other drivers. I'm sure they were all happy that I got in front of the guy.
Now if he were a meanie and did hit me, with all the witnesses I'd have a great case. If I didn't make it, at least Gina would have a new bike!:D

Well all the witnesses could testify to just exactly how dead or crippled for life you are, but I'm not sure that's worth it. I prefer to be in good health and able to ride another day. That being said, I can completely understand why ya did it as I have been tempted to do that before as well, even though I know it's dangerous since you can never tell what road rage will cause a person to do.

It's not so much how many rich people, it's how many people with more money than brains.
Did you know that an adult human brain weighs about 1300-1400 grams? That's as heavy as a lightweight wheelset! If only someone could remove my brain... then I'd be faster up the hills. :D Even more so when you consider that the brain uses about 20 calories per hour! I could increase my sustainable climbing speed by about 10% if I could shut off my brain!
By comparison, a modern penny weighs 2.5 grams, per US Mint specifications. So if I have more than $5.20-$5.60 in my wallet, I can be expected to act like a moron driver if I trade in all my money for pennies.
Let's see... having just bought a chocolate bar, the amount of cash in my wallet right now is $0. Whew! Oh wait... there's some change in my coffee mug that I use for coins. That adds 88 cents. I guess that's still small enough that I'm not allowed to act like a moron driver even if I trade in all my coins for pennies. Not until I make a trip to the ATM, anyway. :p

+1 Everyone is going to boo me, but I'm not going to applaud that, Fred. With what recently happened to Adam (who couldn't avoid it at all) and all of the other stories of cyclists being hit and killed this year, I think we should all use extreme caution when out riding. YOU matter more to Gina, your loved ones and friends and your acquaintances than your trying to teach some ******* a lesson. I doubt he learned anything except to despise cyclists more and to be a bigger Pr!ck (which mind you, you didn't create to begin with and you really have no control over). He could have hit you, sure, and you could have sued him, sure...but would it have been worth all the pain and misery you would have gone through? I give the jerks on the road the right of way always, and I personally would have let him go and stayed far back from his vehicle - let the cars duke it out with him. My taking what is rightfully mine doesn't teach these types a darn thing and when on a 20 lb piece of aluminum, I am no match whatsoever. I do want to ride and never be hit by a car if I can in any way avoid it...and that means I have to AVOID it at all costs and sometimes let the creeps get their way. My two cents, Fred, and I really mean this genuinely when I say that I'm relieved you had no incident or altercation to report.

All I have to say is that I have been hit 3 times by cars and I lost everytime.. All 3 accidents were the drivers fault, one was a hit and run where I was severely injured.. No matter how big you are, you plain and simply lose if you get hit by a car.
The 2 other times I was struck by a car, the drivers simply stated that they did not see me.. I wish the new cell phone law which goes into effect next July happened much sooner.. I notice a lot of bad driving when people have there cell phones distracting them from the road..

neither the phone nor the driving gets full attention..

The problem is you "get them back" only in the very short run. I'd be the first to admit that it feels really good at the time, and as "right" as you are at the time -- the problem is you've just created another driver that hates cyclists (or now hates them even more). All cyclists have to share the road with this guy after the glory of the initial victory wears off.

I put a driver in his place today. He honked at me while I was riding on the right hand side of the right hand lane. There was nowhere I could go so I just pointed to the other lane (which was clear after one car passed me). The driver (older man with an older woman passenger) stayed behind me for a block and then honked again before pulling up beside me and pinning me into the row of parked cars. I started yelling at him and came around to his side to tell him that the law entitles me that space and that I would report his plate number to the DMV if he continued to drive dangerously. He then apologized, then I noticed an SUV with two guys in it yelling "YOU TELL HIM! THAT GUY'S AN IDIOT!"
At least the guy acquiesced and apologized. I only get honked at by older people on that street (Lindley) for some reason. The younger ones just shout **** comments or Lance references.

3F_Bike_Club, if I had your street sense, I would not be comfortable on the road either.
I know this isn't particularly "legal" but I'll tell the story anyway. I was riding down Chapman Ave - the hill section that drops into Orange at about 35 MPH. The street is at least 3 lanes wide at this point. A jackass in a Mercedes thought that wasn't fast enough. He tailgated me coming down the hill for a while, honked at me (aparently for taking up a whole lane) and finally swerved in front of the next guy in the lane to the left of me to get around me. When he passed, he flipped the bird.
I caught up to him at the light (which by the way was less than an 1/8th of a mile away - talk about impatient and passed him. The road had flattened out at this point so I couldn't ride 35 MPH anymore. Again comes this jackass on my tail honking and flashing his lights. So I said screw it - and took up the whole lane instead of moving to the shoulder. Again he passes and again flips the bird.
SO when I caught up to the guy at the next light, I gave the side panels of his car a few kicks - undoubtedly leaving a few dings in the car. He chases me down now through thicker traffic and gets right on my rear wheel. But I guess he wasn't dumb enough to actually bump me.
Next light comes up and he's fuming. I give his car a few more kicks, he tries to run me off the road, and in the process, clips a car in front of him. HA HA.
Either way the guy saved no time and ultimately ended up with a banged up car. Of course, thinking about it later I put my own life at risk doing the tango in traffic with a car. But then again, that's just another reason why I don't like riding on the roads! ;)

+1. That kind of interaction with motorists only worsens the already tense environment that exists on the roads. And personally, when I've heard stories of cyclists behaving this way I think, "well, if he does get hit, I'm not going to feel sorry for him."

-I was riding legally and playing fair up until the guy tried to kill me.
What you don't understand is, legal or not, it is your safety that should be paramount. You don't seem to be one that wishes to learn the proper techniques but I will tell you that you and you alone put yourself in that situation. You may think you are a tough guy. You may be trying to convince people here that you are a tough guy. I think you are an idiot.
If anything, the guy got the message that just because I'm on a bike doesn't mean it's OK to use your car as a lethal weapon.
He did not receive the message you think he did. The message he received will likely be taken out on the next bicyclist he encounters. You would be better for us all if you stayed on the trails. I am sure they will love your road stories.

Tailgating and honking is not even close to running you off the road...
If he pulled up beside you and intentionally swerved at you and put you into the gutter then your response may have been appropriate..
I personally find that giving a**hole drivers the satisfaction of a response like yours is a negative for bike riders.. When people honk at me, I just wave at them.. I wouldn't for a second give a person the satisfaction of knowing they got the best of me..
I guess if he would of come back and ran you over and put you in the hospital that would of showed him who was in charge?

i'm telling ya, the best way is to not do anything at the scene, but to get him back later. (ie: posters everywhere in the parks and schools detailing his vehicle description and plate number , along with a detailed description of his pedophile lifestyle. (embellish a bit ;)
the driver will wonder why people look at him weird, or make disparaging comments about him in the supermarket etc etc. Mess with their minds.

Lets break this down:
1. Guy rides your ass in his car.
2. Guy passes you and flips you off.
3. You catch him at a light-- and presumably split a lane to pass him?
4. He honks at you--- so you kick his car?
Did I miss the part where he tried to run you off the road?
Humor me. What do you think the proper response is when somebody tries to run you off the road with their car?

Humor me. What do you think the proper response is when somebody tries to run you off the road with their car?
I don't know, take his license and call the police? Although, HE could say, he tried to run you off the road because you kicked his door. To which, I doubt the police would have been sympathetic to EITHER of you. But bottom line, Mark, you told the story as if he did nothing more than honk and flip you off and then YOU chased him and kicked his door (TWICE). Are you suggesting that we should ALL give in to road rage and chase people down, jump out of our cars and kick their doors? If I kicked every door of every driver who tailed me, flash their lights at me and have honked at me in their haste, I'd have been arrested by now numerous times for road rage or dead assuming they decided to retaliate. YOU, Mr. Peace-loving Mountain Biker, may want to look at what you are defending on here. Honestly. Look at it a little closer. I, nor anyone on here, is trying to provoke a fight with you. But we're in a community of predominantly road cyclists who get enough harassment as it is. We don't need mountain bikers on road bikes kicking car doors because they can't control their anger (thus, road rage) when out riding on the roads that you stated yourself, you belonged on - which means, YOU have to follow the same laws as the motorists do whether you like it or not. Or, stick to mountain biking and kick the mountain lions.

Good comeback, merider. If only I encountered a tail gating mountain lion I might have the chance to kick one!
That wasn't meant as a comeback, Mark. I'm not trying to be clever or rude to you. I just know from when riding on roads with cars and seeing some of the anger on the motorists' faces at times for my just being out there to begin with, I have a very strong opinion on the matter motivated by my own fear. This isn't a new debate. I just wish everyone would remember something: it's never "us versus them." There is no versus - a car will always win against a bike.

Actually, Mark, I was the one calling you peace-loving, not George. I also wish you wouldn't perceive those of us who have given strong opinions on your original post (and incident you described) as having tantrums. I'm not angry, my face isnt red and I'm not jumping up and down like a four-year-old (I typically only do that when I can't have something fattening to eat because I'm on Weight Watchers). But I will give a strong opinion on a topic that matters to me. Please read my least post as it sums up what I am saying and there is no need for me to be redundant in this one.
