I will be in East Vail from July 29 - Aug 11. I am bringing my mountian bike. Better choice than my raod bike, right? Any advice on where to ride and what to do with a 7 and 9 year old whould be great. Also looking for a good bike shop in the area to ship my to, I will be staying on Booth Falls Road off I-70, the first exit to Vail. Thanks in advance

might want to take your 7-9 year old to summit county cruisers on monday eve in dillon

Road rides the copper triangle is aug 4
Copper to Vail to Minturn to Leadville to Copper 70 something miles

Summit County has free bike ride booklet (you can pick up in summit county bike shops)
listing 4 or 5 road biking options basically
frisco to breck, frisco to dillon to keystone to montezuma, frisco to top of vail pass
summit county booklet also lists 20 summit county mtn biking options

I'd say both road and mtb are equal options. There are plenty of rides for both disciplines.

It's easy to rent a mountain bike at lots of shops, not as easy to rent a road bike. Maybe ship out the road bike if you really like both.

One great mountain bike ride is to have someone drop you off at Vail Pass, about 10 miles from East Vail. Ride over Shrine Pass and work your way back over the back bowls of Vail and back to Vail Village for a well deserved margarita. About 18 miles. I think it's called Commando Run, ask for better directions! It's cool to see the back bowls in the summer.

I like Pedal Power - good people - very involved in the local race scene ...freight drop your rig there.

I like the ride out of Arrowhead. Just go through the gated community up the hill and take the trail at the end. You can't miss it. Then head up, up up past the meadow. Once past the meadow, take a right and go up a short hike a bike section to the top. Then descent the super fun downhill into Edwards and take the River Road back to Arrowhead. That's about a two hour ride.

I also like the ride that starts in West Vail just down the road from the City Market grocery store. Go west from the City Market to the end of the frontage road. Take the obvious trail up, up, up. Just keep following this trail up and down, across a stream ...super tight single track ...loads of fun. This trail eventually comes out at the Pizza Hut in Avon. Two to three hours.

That should keep you busy.

Dillon Reservior is at 9000 feet, and though the daily air temperature can soar into the high 70s, low 80s, the water is probably in the low 60s. I think terra firma is your best bet.
