Ok guys. I have a long road to go before I am able to rid Ragbrai and have fun. I am almost at the 52 week point prior to the 08 ride. What better time for me to plan my training.
I have never attached a file here before so I hope this works for you all. It is in Word format and I will switch it to PDF when I get to work. The Core 1 is simply a set of exercises from the core sticky above. Legs, Arms, Back, etc is weight training. I am open to suggestions. Should I change this up?

would you mind putting a key into that. what is circuit one, what does distance mean, what does hrt mean?
Very cool! I figure if I'm going to ride Ragbrai in one year, I need to be doing 200 outdoor miles a week before the snow flies here in MN(about 3 months away). Over the winter keep up 150-200 miles of indoor training. Once the snow breaks, be at 300 miles a week plus by june. I better get pedaling.

In the same boat, but my main problem is finding the TIME to actually get that much cycling in. Balancing a very demanding job, a family that I adore, and school leaves very little "credit" to go to cycling. Someday, someday.. :)

I hear ya! 40 hours a week at work, 15 hours a week at college, house work, walking the dogs and spending time with them, camping and boating every weekend, then spending time with the wife... there aint any time left.

Updated the sheet with a legend. Note that this is only the first 5 weeks. Time might get tight for this, but if I want to do it I need to do it. You guys are in better shape than I am and probably don't need to dedicate as much time to it. This is why a goal of Ragbrai helps me.
I think I will see what I can find in ride across xxx state and then it will be a ride across the US. If I am not old and buried and can afford it my ride around Australia/New Zealand.

Also Jumbo - sounds like one heck of a plan. I'm going to "dial it up" this winter when I get a trainer, riding 200 miles/week on the trainer (at LEAST!) in addition to my daily 10 or 15 commute. I figure that the combo should get me in the shape I need to be for RAGBRAI!
Can you send the pdf to me too, Tom?
me too - email address removed - thanks for the mail, tom!
me too - snip
How soon till all these email addresses get harvested? :-(
Done, done, done and done! Check your emails!:D

Tom: If you want, you can send it to me (keitmo at gmail dot com) (note: no 'h' in 'keitmo') and I'll host the file on my web server. Should save a little wear and tear on the mail servers.

Willdo!:D
I've got a long ways to go. I have a feeling this is going to be tougher than I first thought. I've put on 70 plus miles in the last three day. Today I headed for the hill and go my butt kicked(less than half way up) by the first big one I came to. It's going to take me some serious work to get the climbing down. I'm going to have to learn to climb standing because I run out of gears and can't spin up them.
It will be tough, but I think all the party will take some of the pain out of it. That does not mean I have a long way to go, but it is doable. Looking at what the Historian has accomplished in a relatively short period of time shows me that it can be done. Reading through the preparation lists for ragbrai makes me laugh. Condoms seem to be a critical item for many to have on hand as is the insulated beer mug hat.
I know for me it's going to take some work to train up to, but I know I can do it. Right now I can ride 45 miles one day, then have a hard 45 minute 15 mile hammerfest the next day without any issues. Thursday I did 33 HARD miles, but my legs were fine on Friday. I think that's when you know you can tour - when you can do a long ride, or a moderately long HARD ride then be fine the next day.
Regardless, I'm going to train, and get better at hills. The long ones still kill me, but I can make it up them without dipping below 10mph and without getting into the "little ring".
Anyway, great idea Jumbo, I'm going to start planning my own training.
In case anyone is interested, Jumbo's 52 week training schedule (in PDF format) may be found here: http://www.keithmo.com/Biking/Rides/RAGBRAI/52%20Week%20Ragbrai%20Training.pdf

Sounds like at least one Pennsylvania State Chess Federation championship I know of.

Thank you. One reason I am blogging and posting is that I am trying to show fat people that they can turn their lives around. And that even an ordinary guy can do it.
Perhaps I'll see you in Iowa next year.
