I did my first 20 mile ride for a long time...wow. It wasn't that bad and I bet I could've gone more but it started sprinkling and i didn't have my rain gear with me so i wussed out

With that ride, I realized what I needed to do to my bike. Yesterday I raised my seat 4" to get my legs at the right geometry and it made the hugest of differences. SERIOUSLY. I am waiting to get a Brooks B17, cycling attire, riser bars, tires, front fender and maybe a front disc. My girlfriend suggested I did a dollar a mile, as in every mile I ride I would get to spend a dollar on my bike. That would be cool, but I don't get paid to ride my bike, I have to go to work. Looks like its something like 10cents a mile. :o

I ditched the kickstand as it kept making noises on bumps and Im trying to cut down on weight a little. Let me know what you'd do to make it more road worthy...thanks

Sounds cool JosephPaul86.

I love the idea of money per mile to spend on bike....and as much as I love to make it as high as possible, I think $.10/mile is closer to reality. You would go broke very fast if you spent $1/mile. Once you are up to 100 miles per week, that would be $400/month. Who can afford that?

Bill gates?

Looks Like I am heading to Austin this weekend to join my cousin on the Town Lake trail. I am way excited...believe it not I've never been to Austin.

Don't sweat it....I lived in FL from 1 year old until a few months ago (going on 37) and I've NEVER been to Miami.

Where are you in TX? Congrats on the 20! It's a good number to pass, isn't it...

I'm in Sugar Land, SW of Houston. Its done raining so I am about to pack everything up. Might treat myself the the 6th street bars since I am going to ride 2 days in a row.

So now my bike fund is going towards gas...wonderful. But i think I've saved over $150 by not driving my truck for the last two weeks. I've learned a great deal thanks to cycling. From road laws, diet, and conservation I am loving this sport. Now can I consider myself and Athlete?

Ditch the knobbies. Maybe 40-50 psi. Go for some 1.5 slicks that inflate to 90 psi. Less resistance and much faster. A 20 mile effort on knobbies might get you 40 with the slicks.

If money is tight, switchout the rear first as it carries most of the load. Had some fast slicks that run me about $20, well worth it!:D

If not interested inmore speed, save your money and take your girlfriend to a movie, prolly ore expensive!:p

Ditto about the tires.
Thing is, depending on your gearing, you may find yourself spinning out.
Personally, If I were to switch just one tire, it would be the front to reduce vibration.

He said he wanted it more road worthy. Would be more roadlike with the high pressure in his rear.:D

Personally as a clyde, and a Morbidly Obese according to my BMI , I wonder if making your ride super efficient as possible is counterproductive. 40 miles is a really long way. If you could cover 20 miles and get the same exercise isnt' that a good thing? Plus I'd love to have that freakish sound of knobbies going really fast when creaping up on some roadie :D

I think you should go with the IRS, sort of and this isn't tax advice :D
"18 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes"
Riding your bike is medical but wow even then I'm soooo overbudget.

Let's not forget our roots. Remember those humid Florida rides? My gloves TRY to wipe the sweat off my brow, and end up smelling like $%&* by the end of the week.

I went to Austin last week, had a LOT of fun. Rode 15 miles Sat, went bar hopping on 6th for about 30 minutes, almost reminded me of Bourbon St. Caught a party and ran into 2 of m High School class mates of '05.

Crummy part was getting back to out bike and my cyclometer was stolen along with seat&post, cargo bag and front skewer was messed up. Whoever it was were desperate, and drunk. The cyclometer was $9 at walmart, seat is a cheap Avenir and post is stock. Good thing i ran the cable through my front and rear wheels with the frame. So now I am shopping for new parts along with a locking seat post clamp.

That is one reason I use a seat post binder bolt. They HAVE to have a metric allen head and most of these thieves don't have it. Once my bike is dialed in, there is seldom a need to make changes in it.

I'll be getting the same thing as you use. I have been enjoying trail riding thanks to visiting Austin and think I am sticking with MTB tires. I lucked out and found a good skewer, tire, seat post & seat on my old 10 speed in the garage. I need to seriously adjust my bikes brakes, FD and might remove the 3 front sprocket as its way too high of a gear and its bent now anyways.

I usually raised my shoulder up and used that.
